Maria Hart, a single mother, says she feels taken advantage of. Hart purchased a 2008 Nissan Altima. It looked shiny and new and she paid $7.5K for it at Empire Auto. A couple days after, the brakes were squeaking & grinding. Hart said Empire told her that the problem was fixed. The car returned (6) times over the course of (5) months. She dealt with a damaged catalytic converter, a bad transmission, and then again leaks in the new transmission. Frustrated, Ms. Hart complained to the Better Business Bureau.
The manager at Empire says the car was sold in “as is” condition. According to CT law, dealers have the right to sell a vehicle as-is if the car over (6) years old or bought for under $3K. This car was (8) eight years old; however, according to Dan Blinn with a Consumer Law Group, the dealer is required to conduct a comprehensive safety check and give the customer certification as such. Blinn says if dealers fail to provide this documentation, it is considered an unfair trade practice, subject to a $500 fine.
