Indiana University has a School of Public & Environmental Affairs that recently published an interesting automobile study with the following excerpt: “It is estimated that the U.S. auto dealer market employs over 700,000 people in sales to vehicle buyers. In Europe, the automakers sell a sizable percentage of vehicles to companies and fleet buyers. In the U.S., manufacturers sell to dealers who then work with individual consumers who purchase cars for their household and are heavily dependent on credit. Auto dealers’ face some new challenges in the internet age, as customers can truly compare and have access to plenty of data on vehicles. Tesla has pioneered a direct-to-consumer model which is unique. It will be interesting to see how this model progresses.

For electric vehicles, initially manufacturers only sold them in certain cities. A UC Davis report indicated that many dealers struggled with selling electric vehicles because they did not truly understand the technology. Many dealers apparently did not properly allocate the time and training for selling these cars. With most major manufacturers now invested in these vehicles, it is likely that the relationships, marketing and financial incentives will begin to accelerate. In addition, it is critical to understand any applicable federal, state and local agency incentives or subsidies that exist.” The complete article is available here.

“They have initiated the transportation of junk cars and other materials from an abandoned property outside Philomath this week after the owner missed a crucial deadline to eliminate the gathered solid waste on the site to meet the proper limit. Following several months of criticisms from neighbors, Danny Farmer reached an arrangement with Benton County to eliminate the large amount of junk that had stacked up on his 30-acres of land on Old Peak Rd & to evict those squatting illegally in camping vehicles and RVs. Farmer met a recent deadline to clear the RVs and those on-site but missed the June deadline to reduce the waste to the level for the property’s forest conservation zoning, which allows owners of property to gather up to eight dilapidated vehicles or the corresponding amount of material waste before the area is considered an unlicensed scrap facility.

It was confirmed that a vast amount of junk still was located on the property.  The County retained Apex Property Clearing of Albany for removal of the mess. Counties may place liens on properties to recoup costs of these cleanups.  County code enforcement staff including Rebecca Taylor says Farmer had made a strong effort to remove the waste recently.  That still leaves a large amount of material scattered around the place, from junk cars, and heaps of scrap-type materials and old appliances, scrap tires and more. It was likely that a crew of 3-4 staff need about 7 days to remove all of the excess. They had figured to work Thursday and Friday, then take the weekend off and complete the task over a couple more days.”  To read the article in its entirety, visit this link.

A recent Ventura County Star article explains as follows: “Vehicle batteries are nearly always recycled, but high rates of recycling are not lone environmental success. Even the best managed recycling needs energy, devours resources and makes some pollution. It is best to attempt to preserve the current ones for a long time. An article titled “Start Me Up,” by Peter Bohr in the last edition of the Auto Club’s “Westways” publication explains some causes for excessive drainage on vehicle batteries. The most clearly evident cause is devices, ranging from the car’s interior lights to mobile phone chargers, which consume power from the vehicle’s battery while the car is not moving. To limit the problem, maintain plug-in power sources provide power when the vehicle ignition is off.  Shorter trips can reduce the power of the unit also, which does not fully allow the alternator to renew the battery; contact with extreme high or low temperatures; and long periods of dormancy. Dashboard camera and radar detection devices can consume power, and some aftermarket auto starting systems also contribute to reduction. Many batteries fail due to presence of a faulty relay, according to testautos.com.

On their website, Nationwide suggests that drivers maintain their vehicle batteries to limit corrosion and better affect their lifespan. Clean the terminals using a toothbrush coated with baking soda & water to clean off the remnants with a liquid bottle and dry with a cloth. The site also recommended tightening batteries by fastening to avoid short circuit breaks caused by impact.  Batteries are ordinarily recharged by the alternator, which runs exclusively when the engine is operating. Vehicles which are stored for extended periods without running, such as usually RVs & motorbikes — can derive a benefit from usage of a device designed for maintenance, which uses a 12 volt outlet and maintains the stability of energy after lengthy periods of usage”.  The article in full form is available at this link.

An article by Cole Rosengren on Waste Dive explained the following: “Columbus City Council chose unanimously approval a new 5-year agreement with Rumpke at their recent meeting, as reported by The Columbus Dispatch. The $45M contract includes picking up recycling, yard waste and scrap and street bins. Senior officials were not happy with the heightened cost; however, the current deal comes to an end very soon and dealing with a service interruption was seen as even worse.  With this ordinance, Columbus continues to negotiate with Rumpke for possible cost savings over the next 6 months. The city’s Dept. of Public Service will further deliver quarterly updates to the council on any progress in reducing expenses.

Companies bidding out the 2012 original deal chose not to do so this time, telling the city that it could be more cost-effective to divide the city into separately bidding zones or splitting up collection from disposal. This new contract allows both Columbus and Rumpke to cancel with one hundred eighty days of notice.  Columbus, OH could approve a new 5-year $44M million agreement with Rumpke for continual collection of recyclables and yard wastes. Costs significantly have risen, but since only one company bid on it they are stuck with them.  Over the past few years the marketplace for recycling has become more difficult for some companies. Bill Phillips posted an article on WTOV 9 on February 23, 2017 informing us of the following: “Jefferson County Commissioners are crafting a plan together to help the county’s problem with junk cars, which have become a blight and potential health risk.  The commissioners met with individuals for litter enforcement to confer ways to combat the issue. They might meet with the county prosecutor to finalize a plan that would give establishments the needed tools to get control of this problem.  There are two licensed junkyards in Jefferson County, but driving through the county that would be hard to fathom since we have a lot of places where many vehicles that are obviously inoperable are dumped in yards.” The full story is available here.

Mark Law recently posted a report in the Times Leader with the following details: “Commissioners in Jefferson County discussed junk cars and Real estate agents say it is difficult to sell properties due to junk cars along the road.  Roughly 60 junk vehicles are on the JFK Highway. A sheriff, highway patrol unit or local trustee can send a letter to the power requesting that junk vehicles to be removed or put in a garage within 10 days. According to Terry Bell of the trustee association, property owners simply can refuse to receive the certified letter. Commissioner Thomas Graham said it seems that enforcement officers are not certain about how to enforce junk car laws.” The complete details can be found here.

In January 2017, Adam Polisse posted a story titled ‘Freeport’s Enforcement of Junk Car Ordinances’ which told us the following:  “In 2016, 202 junk cars littering properties for too long were removed and cited in Freeport, a significant increase over previous years.   Non-running & unlicensed vehicles should be removed from private property (7) days after the owner is notified. Police typically address unsightly vehicles as complaints come in. Parking enforcement personnel began following these complaints, stepping up enforcement to get them cleaned up. Freeport officials are attempting to fortify their ordinances to beautify the region. The City Council’s preliminary vote seeks to expand the definition of nuisances to include tractor-trailers and vehicles under tarps.

Of the cars reported in 2016, many residents handled the violation by fixing the vehicle or renewing their tags. Some were issued citations to appear before for hearings and many vehicles were removed at a cost to the owner. Citations can surpass $50, based on the hearing outcomes.  The ordinance is similar to the way the city handles wood & brush piles under the rodent section of the nuisance ordinances.  Junk & unlicensed cars impact the entire city, and removal the old vehicles is the right thing to do.” The full story is available at http://www.journalstandard.com/news/20170127/freeports-enforcement-of-junk-car-ordinances-increased-in-2016

A February 9, 2017 article by Cole Rosengren on Waste Dive discusses an innovative recycling process. “The OR Beverage Recycling Cooperative (OBRC), which operates the container deposit program, is launching a pilot program to gather glass bottles to be refilled by breweries.  The initial phase is expected to begin in 2 years and focuses on larger bottles. Once they expand the volume of “BottleDrop” redemption stations across the state it could gather more than 2M bottles annually. Since OBRC already has a $34M budget and 250+ employees to run the state’s deposit program, it’s in a good spot to host a pilot on this scale.  The redemption rate will be heightened to ten cents beginning in April as part of efforts to improve rates of return. OBRC has current relationships with the state’s various breweries so the potential for higher collection volumes gives this pilot an advantage for likely success. While various breweries already allow guests to bring in large growlers for refilling, the option isn’t widely adopted for different bottle types.

Reverting to the model of refillable bottles common for beer and soda makers, could assist recyclers that have been struggling to deal with mixed-quantities of glass. The market for glass among manufacturers remains high in some states, but the continuous shift to one-stream has led to reduced quality and mixed colors are less valuable. Some organizations, like Alpine Recycling in CO, invested in further advanced sorting equipment to resolve these issues. Last year, a lengthy list of companies from the beverage & waste industries also created the U.S. Glass Recycling Coalition and has been working with states developing new solutions. Meanwhile, a group of local municipalities have ceased their collection of these the material until local markets improve. The newest additions to the list are New Orleans and Knoxville.”  The complete article is available here.

Vehicle Charging Equipment for Electric Autos

When you decide to sell us your car in Obetz, Jackson, or New Albany, you have made a good environmental decision. The first step to sell your junk car in regions such as Grove City, Jefferson, and Hilliard, is to obtain a junk car quote.  The good news is when you are selling a scrap car in Galloway, Hamilton, or Reynoldsburg, it will be handled in an environmentally conscious manner.  There may be some situations when you ask yourself: who buys old cars in Montgomery, Mifflin, or New Rome, OH?

A UCLA study known as Overcoming Barriers to Electric Vehicle Charging in Multiple-Unit Dwellings told us the following: “MUD ownership has an effect on a resident’s incentive to invest in home charging. MUDs include both apartment-style structures and condominiums. Apartment buildings are usually owned by an individual or organization that rents out the units to tenants. The owner is accountable for all shared (common) areas like lighting for the lobby. Any major structural changes to the site will be paid for by ownership who makes decisions to invest based on heightening the value of the units & charging higher rent. Condos are owned by the individual resident with exterior decisions, such managing common areas, likely made by the home owner association (HOA) oversight board. Those renting, are less motivated because they are not likely to invest money in an immoveable type of equipment that they may move from in the future. Apartment owners & management teams may (or may not) not view EVSE as an amenity that attracts tenants.

Condo owners are more likely to view the EVSE as a site improvement positively impacting the potential value of their unit, although a significant installation might require support by the HOA governing board.  MUD ownership will also control who is responsible for shared area management including oversight of the 110/120-volt outlets that may be accessed in the parking area. In an apartment settings, outlets, which can provide Level 1 charging if they have ample electrical capacity, which is likely if connected to the primary house panel. The house panel controls the supply of electricity for all common appliances & shared areas such like laundry and pool equipment. Renters would need approval from ownership to use electricity when the exterior electrical outlets are connected to the house panel The MUD stock in the region consists of 78 percent apartments. The Beach & Peninsula Cities are more likely condos. Redondo Beach’s large duplex & triplex supply (7,081) is 64% condominium.  The full article is available here.

Now you know that we buy scrap cars Monday through Friday in areas including Brice, Flint, and Westerville, OH.  Who junks cars and offers complimentary towing removal of the vehicles in Truro, Bexley, and Madison, OH?

Here is the introduction to UCLA’s Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Tech Program: “In 2012, Governor Jerry Brown instituted an executive order establishing a goal of 1.5M zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on CA’s roadways by 2025. To achieve this goal, a number of barriers must be hurdled. In the Governor’s 2013 ZEV Plan, the 1st challenge is a need to have the needed refueling infrastructure. Electric vehicles need a certain means for fueling and set of equipment. Instead of doing so at gas stations, most plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) owners charge when at home overnight using Level 1 or Level 2 charging. While this work well for single-family homeowners, those in apartments and condos, also known as multi-unit dwellings (MUDs), have increased difficulty. First is the high cost of EVSE installation; a renter or owner has a low motivation to invest in charging technology.

This study explores MUD linked barriers to greater PEV adoption, in the South Bay are of LA County as a case study. The report seeks to support the prioritization of policy tools and seek outreach for MUDs which show high latent PEV demand and a low cost of EVSE installation.

To better comprehend the MUD portfolio of the South Bay area and identify MUD parcels likely to show latent PEV demand, the UCLA Luskin Center looked at land use data from the LA County Office of the Assessor and new vehicle registration information from IHS Auto. Also, we viewed 27 MUD sites with an electrician & reviewed 19 EVSE install process and costs to determine the cost of using home charging in MUD residences & identify potential lower-prices home charging solutions.”  We will continue to review their work. Auto Body Collision Columbus Market

Many people choose to sell a car for cash throughout Lincoln Village, Amlin, and Clinton each year. Those with non-running vehicles in Groveport, Dublin, and Washington, should sell your scrap car to us. Those with broken down cars in Pickerington, Valleyview, Upper Arlington, can call us for the value of a junk car. We buy any car, running or not, in Brice, Flint, and Westerville; therefore, contact us for a quote today.

In the January 2, 2017 edition of Auto News, Richard Truett posted a story about the demand for auto body workers in Columbus, OH:  “On Monster, the giant national career website, more than 1,000 auto dealers, independent body shops, hot-rod shops and other businesses are running help wanted ads for body-shop technicians. There’s a nationwide shortage of skilled body repair technicians, painters and auto body prep experts that rivals the shortage of service department repair technicians. To help offset the ongoing shortage of body-shop techs, the Collision Repair Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Hoffman Estates, Ill., is kicking off its second year of nationwide career fairs aimed at attracting high school and college students.

The fairs, staffed by new-car dealers, body-shop supply companies, independent body shops and suppliers, are scheduled for 14 major cities starting early next month. More fairs are scheduled for the fall. In 2016, each event attracted roughly 200 students, said Brandon Eckenrode, the foundation’s development director. At the one-day fairs, held at schools, training facilities, hotels and other locations, students have the opportunity to meet with potential employers, including body-shop managers, who explain the career path from school to work.

Many students, Eckenrode said, are surprised to learn how much they can make if they become experts at painting cars. “I give students a pep talk when I meet them before they enter the fair and tell them there are people who paint cars that easily make over six figures. But that’s not where you are going to start,” Eckenrode said. Like technician trainees who start out doing menial work such as oil changes and tire rotations, collision-repair students also begin their careers performing jobs that don’t require specialized training, such as prep work that requires removing trim and broken components and cleaning the outside of the vehicle to get it ready for body repairs. In these jobs, they learn how to use tools and how to follow proper procedures.

Although attendance at the fairs has been strong — one held in November in Columbus, Ohio, drew nearly 400 students — the foundation also works with schools in markets it doesn’t serve. “We reach out to schools and ask that they refer any student looking for full-time work. We gather their information and have them create a student resume, which we use to build a database. Then we distribute that to employers,” Eckenrode said.  The foundation doesn’t yet have firm data on the number of students who have found collision-repair jobs through the fairs, but Eckenrode says they are working.  “Part of the fun of my job is that I have met students at 10 a.m. who are unemployed and they walk out at 2 p.m. with several job offers because of the need that is out there.” The full story is available here.

Scrap & Junk Entering Great Lakes

If you have an old vehicle sitting around in Jefferson, Gahanna, or Franklin—take advantage of our scrap my car service today! Those planning to repair a junky car in Blendon, Blacklick, or Grove City, may simply want to just call a site for scrapping cars. If you are still hanging on to a junk vehicle in Hilliard, Obetz, or Jackson, contact our office to sell an old car. Call Columbus Scrap Cars for unwanted cars in New Albany, Galloway, and Hamilton—we will even purchase a totaled car.

A rather disturbing report posted on Waste Dive by Cole Rosengren on Decemaber 21, 2016 tells us the following: “New research from the Rochester Institute of Technology indicates that nearly 22M lbs. of plastic trash are entering the Great Lakes from the U.S. and Canada per year. Nearly 1/2 of that plastic is ending up in Lake Michigan, followed by Erie, Ontario, Huron and Superior. The amount of plastic in Lake Michigan equals roughly 100 full-sized swimming pools filled with plastic bottles. Unlike in the ocean, many of this scrap are carried to shorelines by windy conditions & currents. Approximately 80% of the junk found on the many beaches are comprised of plastic.  This report, which will be posted in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, claims to be the only full-scale look at this plastic waste in the Great Lakes. The many computer generations that were used to follow these materials found that cities like Chicago, Toronto, Elyria/Cleveland and Detroit seem to be contributing to the dilemma and often swap each other’s waste on their shores as a result. Like plastics in the ocean, much of this material was created to be too small for easy capture and attempted measures onshore are currently seen as the greatest options.

Such events include anti-litter campaigns, street washing operations and more collection determinations at the source. Baltimore now has (2) “trash wheels” which collect waste from its nearby harbor and (2) Florida cities have even invested in automatic waste collection boats to maintain cleanliness. These attempts can catch big items before they break down into lesser pieces, but many environmental groups think the clear answer is to switch packaging materials to limit the amount of plastic ending up in canals at all. While the scale of this problem in the Great Lakes may appear large, the quantity of plastic debris ending up in the world’s oceans is amply larger. The cleanup efforts are working toward introducing a prototype that can capture much of this scrap next year & companies are getting better with making products from alternative material. Preventing this product from accessing bodies of water remains a less costly, though still elusive, option.” The full article is available at:  http://www.wastedive.com/news/study-22m-pounds-of-plastic-debris-enter-the-great-lakes-each-year/432847/

Scrap & Recycling Business Lesson

In the auto scrap and recycling business in Dublin, Washington, and Pickerington the guy who buys scrap cars can provide you a quote. Day to day pricing for junk vehicles in Darbydale, Valleyview, and Upper Arlington can fluctuate based on the place where to scrap a car. We buy junk cars now throughout Brice, Flint, and Westerville, offering same-day and next-day pickup. If residents in the areas of Bexley, Madison, and Gahanna are not aware, fast vehicle removal is here.

An article composed by Jessica Lyons Hardcastle in the December 15, 2016 edition of Environmental Leader explains as follows: “Can recycling be profitable? Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRC) CEO Alan Handley says yes. Within (6) months of being in business its new Heartland single-stream processing site, the enterprise is making a profit — about $100/ton in proceeds from the sale of various commodities — and ultimately thinks they will to divert more than 1M tons of product from landfill by 2025. This will further prevent more than 300K metric tons of greenhouse emissions deemed harmful per year.

The IL-based waste processing organization owns and/or runs (6) sites in the greater-Chicago area. In 2013, the city employed a single-stream style program geared to assist for 150K+ single-family residences. This means that an increase in tonnage for those like LRC, and also overloaded Chicagoland’s product recovery site capacity. LRC, which controls almost 1/3 of the region’s material, before was paying millions each year to dump waste at landfills. Tipping fees in the region cost, approximately, $50/ton, and do across the US. LRC’s solution to the problem is to build a thriving materials gathering facility, or MRF, with the best equipment. The $8.5M project obtained a $1.5M below-market credit from the Closed Loop Fund recently, along with extra financing from Comerica. The corporation’s older, outdated equipment only processes 20 ton/day; at the new site it processes 20 tons/hour.

A Closed Loop Fund report about LRC says Handely views things contrarily than many competitors in the same industry. There are many operators to haul or collect product, and then also run landfills & MRFs. Often it is less costly and more profitable for an operative to landfill material — even when it is recyclable — relatively than sort & re-market it. Many operators will pick to do whatever is the greatest profitable option. Also, LRC operates residential & commercial hauling amenities, MRFs, construction & destruction recycling. Handley feels this creates leverage crosswise through business and greater chance for diversion.

According to its 1st public update report, last month, the fund has spent about $20M in (9) projects so far, and this has generated more than $50M in co-investment from cities, banks & impact investors. As additional companies invest millions in such efforts, mounting the Closed Loop Fund’s cash, we will suppose it’s likely to see more pioneering business models that make a profit from recycling, despite low commodity prices. And we look forward to learning about additional success stories like LRC’s.” The complete article is available here: http://www.environmentalleader.com/2016/12/lakeshore-ceo-talks-trash-how-to-make-a-profit-in-the-recycling-industry/

Look no further than Columbus Scrap Cars for a junk car quote and auto removal in Hamilton, Reynoldsburg, or Montgomery.  In the past two years the price for a damaged car in Mifflin, New Rome, and Lake Darby has dropped quite a bit.  We are available to take your call and provide a quote for junk car to those in Whitehall, Worthington, and Lockbourne, OH.  Each and every business should consider taking steps to be more environmentally friendly.

On Tuesday December 6, 2016, Andy McKeever composed an article on iBerkshires with the following details:  “Keep up with auto inspection stickers or you may be in violation.  Mayor Linda Tyer submitted a petition that adds verbage to the junk vehicle code indicating any vehicle lacking a valid inspection label would be illegal to house on properties beyond 48 hours. The petitions where presented to the Ordinance & Rules Committee without discussion, the initiative was okayed to return to the full council.  The Fire Dept. apparently has issues in the past attempting to cite owners for storage of junk cars. The cities code has prohibited owners from retaining them for a period exceeding 48 hours. All abandoned, wrecked, junked, dilapidated, non-functioning or unregistered vehicles, unless they maintain a junk dealer license.

The law did not apply any restriction on an auto that may be registered & still running but has an expired or otherwise sticker that is not valid. These citations are customarily given to land owners storing several junk vehicles on the premises. Citations for those violating the ordinance are $50 for the 1st offense, $100 for the 2nd, and $300 for the 3rd. It is unlikely that the Fire Dept. would be delivering citations those circumstances. Inspections are to instruct property owners and citations are a final resort. And it is not likely that the inspectors would be searching around the city for markers on simply a vehicle or two in a driveway.

To stay current those inspection stickers still need to be valid. The alteration is small but it is not the 1st time this year that the order has been issued. One scrap site in Westfield has the cars are parted out & resold.  Fire inspection team brought them before the Board for buying & selling old vehicles without a car dealer license. The board finally determined that it was not in violation of state law since the parts were not being sold from the Pittsfield site since the purchases were all for scrap vehicles that the license properly covered and the vehicles are not the sole business. In 2015, the junk vehicle rule inspired charges against former candidate for mayor Craig Gaetani. He was alleged to have threatened a woman in the Fire Dept’s inspection bureau about a case of scrap vehicles. In that particular circumstance he supposedly called requesting the dept. to remove junk vehicles that were illegally positioned on a property he owned and the exchange got heated — leading to criminal charges.”  The complete story is available here.

A recent article on Recycling Today tells us the following:  “GEP Fuel & Energy Indiana has proclaimed plans to open a recycling center with a scrap-plastics-to-fuel site in Camden, Indiana. Various Indiana gov’t officials joined GEP leaders for the announcement.  GEP Fuel & Energy Indiana is a joint-effort between U.S. Energy Logistics, Toledo, OH, & GEP Fuels. The organization says it plans to invest $100M to build a 450K-sq.-foot recycling site there. Construction on the venture is expected to begin by the 1st quarter of 2017. This facility will process recyclable & non-recyclable plastics into a variety of viable end products. Also, the companies plan to construct an adjacent facility for $200M that will convert lower-value scrap that can’t economically be recycled into a fuel for the transportation markets.

U.S. Rail Corp.is expected to transport about 1,500 tons of plastics each day. Don Willis, who will manage the recycling side of the project, says the higher value plastic scrap will be recycled & sent to end markets such as the vehicle industry. The low value & zero-value plastic processed there will be transported to an energy facility on a conveyor. Steve Hogan, the president, says they decided to have the site in because of its closeness proximity to consumer plastics. The total capital investment for the project is $303M. The IN Economic Development Corp. (IEDC) offered GEP Fuel & Energy Indiana up to $2M in performance-based tax subsidies on the company’s job creation efforts. Most of the plastics that will be handled and used will be recovered from auto shredder residue (ASR). Hogan thinks the the recycling center will accept 1M tons of ASR annually, about 40 rail cars each day. Willis says the bulk of the ASR will be shipped on rotary cars. Recycling will include magnets & eddy current separators. Green Machine will be the maker of the sorting line.

In a statement, Jim Schellinger, president of the IDEC, said they were pleased they chose to locate here in Indiana. Indiana’s boasts low-cost, low-tax, decreased-regulation business environment. Hogan further added that it has taken the company 3.5 years to select the right technology for the site, supplied by Foy Group Ltd., a partner on the energy side of the project.” The complete article is available here.

NBC News 10 WHEC delivered two stories this week regarding NY motor vehicle inspectors as follows: “This week’s power outage effecting the DMV’s inspection system appears to be up and running again. The system began to come back online after frustrations were plentiful within auto shops & for auto owners. Many of those with expiring inspections were attempting to take care of business and were told they would need to return. At My-Tee Auto, his mechanics were unable to connect to the state’s inspection system.

The system is designed so that you cannot keep doing inspections and filing them with the state later on. They had to turn away customers. There were similar headaches over at East Ave. Auto. Apparently no one was able to get any answers from the Department of Motor Vehicles.  The main help line at the state was down, nobody could get through.  The DMV did call back to say the inspection system is administered by a third party named Opus. Finally at 5 pm, Opus felt that the problem had been corrected. People obviously depend on them for inspections of their cars, and they (in turn) then depend state’s system for process completion. According to the auto shops, this is not the 1st instance of this happening, yet was the lengthiest the system has been down. While the DMV thinks the issues have been repaired, it may be best to call ahead to make sure everything is going smoothly again. The full article is available here.

Governor Andrew Cuomo approved a new vehicle check during yearly state inspections. The Senate passed a rule requiring auto inspection sites to verify if a vehicle’s windows are tinted beyond 70% of the outside light threshold. Cuomo gave approval to this new auto check, stating that if windows are too dark, the vehicle will now have failed an inspection.” The story is available here.

Automobile Credit Problem

Those who have heard some bad news from their mechanic in Urbancrest, Minerva Park, or Georgesville should call our auto buyer. If your car costs more to repair than it is worth it is auto junk—those in Brown, Norwich, and Perry should call. Many vehicle owners with serious mechanical issues on older cars aren’t aware that we buy junk cars in Plain, Sharon, and Lincoln Village. Are you there in Amlin, Clinton, or Groveport going to replace a transmission for over $2,000 on an 11 year old vehicle when we buy used cars for scrap. We are an environmentally sound car scrapping option.

On November 27, 2016, Greg Gardner of the Detroit Free Press wrote an article with these details: “The trend toward easy credit and longer auto loans terms has left a record number of consumers trading in cars that are worth less than what they still have due on their loan. This situation is commonly referred to as “being underwater” or “upside down” on your loan. They already are having some effect as automakers heighten incentives and sub-prime lenders watch their delinquency rates. In 2016, a record 32%, or nearly 1/3, of all vehicles involved in trade-ins at U.S. dealers belong in this category. When the consumers go to purchase a new vehicle they must add the deficit between their loan balance and the vehicle’s value to the price of the new vehicle they wish to buy.

The lowest the “underwater” percentage has been historically was near 14% in 2009, amid the Great Recession when credit was hard to obtain. Previously the high was 29% in 2006, when the housing market was in bad shape. The average new vehicle loan is for 68 months, according to Experian, which tracks this stuff. Sub-prime borrowers, those with lousy credit scores, are borrowing over an average of 72 months, or 6 years.

While those loans limit monthly payments, they also hurt the buyer’s equity, or amount of the loan principal paid off. Rather, it expands more slowly than the vehicle depreciates. If the car gets stolen, or wrecked, or you really want to buy a new car while you’re upside down then it is a problem. This happens as the average retail price of a new car is near an extraordinary high of about $34K. Some of this increase is spurred by consumers’ preferences for bigger, fully equipped pickups, SUVs and such. The result is they borrow more to get the car they want. The average new vehicle loan was $29,880 in the 2nd quarter of this year.

Leasing is now at record levels of more than 30 percent of all sales, has grown increasingly popular. Already, especially in segments such as compact and mid-sized vehicles, used car values are dropping as a wave of three year old vehicles are returned from lease. This uptick in supply is forcing down the amount dealers are enthusiastically willing to pay for these at auctions. Ford CFO Bob Shanks told people that their Ford Credit segment cut its forecast for 2017 profits because due to drops in auction values for used cars. Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch, have expressed some concern about the pattern. Their focus is on the $38B market for securities based on auto loans. These are bundled auto loans, similar to the groups of mortgages that fell in the 2008 crash of the mortgage bubble. History indicates borrowers are likely to remain recent on their car loans compared on their mortgage payments when the economy weakens. Banks can cars quickly versus a mortgage. Fitch says that delinquencies of over 60 days on sub-prime vehicle loans rose to 5% in September, the 2nd highest level since 2001, and higher than last year.” The full article is available here.

Maura Keller in American Recycler wrote an article titled ‘Auto Recycling Market Volatile’ with the following updates: “The auto recycling industry has experienced one of the most difficult economic times in decades. Recycling companies are worried. Investors are cautious and scrap handlers are downright jittery. Industry vets say 2017 will likely be better, but business is still not appearing to be robust. According to Sean Kelly, a researcher at the Center for Recovery & Recycling at Worcester Polytechnic in Massachusetts, the industry is certainly hurting and this has a lot to do with the foreign tariff war regarding specific commodities, among other things, such as dumping (selling below their costs).

The U.S. Dept. of Commerce (DOC) recently imposed duties on imports of cold-rolled steel, used to make auto components, appliances & shipping containers. China is targeted because of their dumping that has hurt the U.S. steel industry & lowered steel prices around the worldwide. The tariffs against China have hindered the U.S. auto recycling industry tremendously. China had been overproducing & flooding the market & steel prices were far down. Scrap vehicle bodies were worth $60 to $70/GT, making it near impossible to earn any money.

China has begun imposing anti-dumping tariffs on various steel imports from the EU, Japan & South Korea, all of which has a domino effect on the American recycling industry. As the struggle goes on, more companies are working hard to ensure all metal bearing products end up being refined & recycled back into the economy.  The Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group (ATG) just released a study on auto aluminum suggesting recycling rate for end-of-life vehicles to be in excess of 90%. The purpose was to obtain a more quantitative grasp of the fate of auto aluminum at the end of its useful life.

GLR has now 11 locations & joint ventures in MI & NY, employing approximately one-hundred and fifty people, recycling over 100M pounds of metal, paper & plastic. What GLR has done is new in the market. They’ve begun their own tech/lead generation program, www.TheScrapPost.com, which links recyclers & scrappers worldwide. This comes at a time that the market’s downfall is struggling for auto recyclers. GLR’s competitors use this website & revenues are likely to hit $5M. One key aspect of auto recycling that is gaining more focus with the overall downturn in the market is plastic recycling from autos. The generated plastics from shredders are transferred to the landfill or used as landfill coverage. Some plastics may be incinerated to reclaim the energy. Tires are often reused if adequate tread exists but typically either incinerated, shredded or reused for very different applications, like rubber for courts, turf field pellets or asphalt applications.” The article in its entirety is available here.

If you’re planning to buy a pre-owned car, be aware that it could have flood problems from Hurricane Matthew, Georgia’s attorney general says in a news release. Many flood-damaged cars are being sold at auction-houses and could end up at used vehicle lots, Sam Olens says. Sometimes the cars’s title will indicate ‘salvage’ or ‘totaled,’ but sketchy dealers re-title the (car) in another state and don’t disclose the damage on the car’s title as they should.  The bad  way of doing business, better known as “title washing,” could result in your downfall as water-logged parts causing electrical problems, as well as poorly functioning brakes, airbags & other systems. The damage may not be readily visible, especially to the busy consumer.

Bearing that in mind, drivers should verify the car’s history on the National MV Title Information System. You simply type the VIN # and find the history of loss on the car within a month from many auto companies across the US. Olens also suggests looking at the title. You can fully vet the car if listed flood, junk, salvage, rebuilt or  under reconstruction. Another tip is to look for signs of flood damage. Musty odors, unusual marks or fading fabrics are all signs.  If you smell dampness or some type of detergent in the vehicle, it could be a signal that somebody is trying to mask the odor. Also, check the interior, dashboard, glove boxes and other discrete areas for mud or silt. You should be sure to inspect damaged holes and closely look the ignition, lights and other components. Lastly, Olens suggests getting the car viewed closely by a mechanic. Have the auto thoroughly examined by an unbiased mechanic before you ink a contract or pay anything.  If the auto dealer refuses to allow that, then go elsewhere.  The full story can be read at http://www.ajc.com/news/crime–law/warning-the-lookout-for-flood-damaged-used-cars/2nPGGjTM8EIkYLJX5LOIDL/

An article this week on Tech Crunch from Sarah Buhr tells us the following: “Maven, a car share company from General Motors, is cruising its way into San Francisco today. The proclamation made recently is one part of a further roll-out in several cities throughout the U.S., which began at the beginning of this year. A city-based car share service known as Maven City is currently available in (9) cities in the nation, along with Lyft’s new rental program Lyft Express Drive, which recently rolled out. GM has been associated with Lyft and added a $500M in funding. The major car maker supposedly was in discussions to purchase the rideshare company. Maven claims to have over 10,000 members & Lyft drivers have used Express Drive thus far, traveling millions of miles between them.

There are many ways to travel in SF, which include Bay – Lyft, Uber, MUNI and taxi service. Maven will also be in competition with older, established car-sharing outfits. Getaround has been in operation since 2009 and Zipcar — which was purchased by Avis — started in the year 2000. Maven rolled out a 1-way rental service for drivers to pick up a car in one spot and drive it to another without having to return it. But Zipcar has also been doing the same for a while. One of the mini vehicles they use is pictured here.

Maven thinks it will stand out in S.F among the tech crowd, using newer cars with technology that is fully connected car sharing bringing members to where they want to go. Maven uses a phone app to unlock& enter the vehicle. Maven is using GM cars and can thus offer sophisticated integrations with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar and more. Maven costs about $8/hr to rent any of its vehicles.” The full story is available here.

An October 4, 2016 article on Recycling Today tells us the following: “The Plastics Industry Association, Washington, has announced the Automotive End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Recycling Demo Project, which tests the theory that increasing auto recycling is a benefit to recyclers & the plastics industry. To bring this project to a reality, SPI is associating with the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA), Manassas, Virginia; Automotive Recyclers of CA, London, Ontario; Canadian Plastics Industry (CPIA), Ontario, and various other plastics & auto recyclers. The goal of the ELV Recycling Demo Project is development of a means of collecting and recovering polypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) auto components in a manner which demonstrates tech and economic viability.

About 12 to 15M cars are scrapped annually in the U.S. The typical lifespan of a vehicle is approximately 11 years and increasingly the vehicles are made of more plastics. Factors such as usage of plastic to lessen the weight of cars helps meet increased Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements & the design flexibility afforded by plastics which are moving the increased use of plastics in new auto design. To recover plastic components prior to shredding is mainly driven by the aftermarket, but some recovery for powered recycling also is underway.

Kim Holmes, the Sr. Director of recycling and diversion at SPI says that you must have to have concrete data that promotes the business case for these types of models. Another function of the ELV Recycling Demo Program is to collect information to better guide design-for-recycling projects that can assist future auto design and plastic recovering. Once collected and analyzed, the program data and best practices will be used with the auto and plastic recycling industries. The goals are to predict advancements in demand for recycled product so recyclers can properly invest in additonal capacity with greater confidence. The complete article is available at this link.

Scrap car removal is executed on a same-day or next-day time frame throughout Truro, Bexley, and Madison 6 days a week. The environmental benefits of our recycling processes far outweigh the value of a scrap car in most cases.

A September 30, 2016 story in Recycling International by Kirstin Linnenkoper tells us the following: “Over six billion batteries were sold in the US in 2014, with a combined weight of 242M kilograms, says a report by North American battery collection outfit Call2Recycle, which recycled a record 3.3M kilograms of one-use and rechargeable batteries in the 1st half of this year. Market indicators proved that, in 2014, alkaline-style batteries were over 60% of battery weight sold, while SSLA/Pb and Li-Ion are estimated to be approximately about 15%. Smith says that over 80% of rechargeable batteries marketed in 2014 were actually Li-Ion, while fewer than 40% were marketed by weight.

Primary batteries were said to have a much shorter lifespan than the rechargeable battery style, with about 80% of alkaline batteries disposed of by their seventh year. Li-Ion and Ni-Cd batteries didn’t reach the 80% disposal rate until after 11 or 15 years respectively. Alkaline batteries will last (15+) years. Also, the rate of which batteries are used in all consumer products is definitely increasing. As a result of this trend, the statistics will be different from what has been designed.

Over the next few years, the battery classification is going to change quite a bit in sales and mix. The amount of single-use batteries sold in the US is likely to decline, while rechargeable batteries are believed to surge. In 2014, the approximate split of battery sales by weight was 2/3 primary to 1/3 rechargeable. Some of the major trends include that as single-use batteries have a short lifecycle and are likely to be simply removed from a products, using sales volume in the market in calculation of the collection rate and recycling plan performance is fairly accurate. Rechargeable-style batteries have a lengthed lifecycle and, for some attractions and product applications, more probable to be embedded in many products.” The full article is available here.

The following excerpt is from Joel Makower in The State of Green Business, 2016: “Energy efficiency — the volume of energy necessary to produce a unit of GDP — continued to be among the success stories around the world, continuing the steady improvement witnessed nearly every year. Global energy efficiency signifies about 40% of the GHG decrease potential that can be realized cost-effectively. Often, it is a solid upfront investment that pays for itself in time, while allowing for the added benefits of limiting the cost of energy and heightening the energy usage of the economy. One example is the growth of financing vehicles that are enabling building owners, cities and others to invest in technology with minimal money down, paying for the upgrades over the long haul through efficiency savings.

Organizations are transitioning to more sustainable energy sources across U.S. and worldwide electricity grids. Increased demand for and production of renewable energy among firms is obvious according to research. Between 2010 and 2014, renewable electrical sources such as wind, biomass & hydroelectricity — grew 66% to 90% for US businesses and beyond, meanwhile fossil fuels & other electrical sources with greater environmental significance — such as natural gas, & petroleum — increased only 24% and 30%. Renewable energy sources do account for a small volume of the total electricity mix — most contributing less than 1% of the total electricity. Also, various forms of renewable energy dipped as a part of the electricity mix of the reviewed companies during the 2010-to-2014 period, even as they increased overall, such as solar (–53%), geothermal (–18%) and landfill gas (–12%). In the U.S., this is partially due to the heightened availability of lower-cost domestic-based natural gas. The public & private sector are allocating more in renewable pools of electricity. It is likely that business will continue to alter the energy mix toward sustainable generation and will be seen in the coming years.” The complete report is available here.

All those processors surveyed then employ some downstream separation beyond just the magnetic and air-separation. All the remaining product is either passed through certain processes for further classification or put through the same one another to be sure the maximum yield.

Downstream separation systems (DSSs) are processes that use dry and/or wet automatic separating technologies to heighten scrap in value and by-product classification. In many cases, shredding operators partake in some form of further downstream separation. Some operators conduct their process without hammer mill shredding. These companies buy already shredded scrap in bulk and then sort and separate. Auto shredded scrap can be sorted based on:

  • Size
  • Color
  • Weight
  • Magnetic properties
  • Electrical conductivity
  • Density and chemical composition

The non-ferrous residue (NFR) can enter these places as a mixed non-ferrous, non-metallic scrap stream that has been shredded, magnetic and, in some cases, air separation. NFR can be composed of plastics, rubbers, wood, stones, and dozens of other material. The volume of the contaminants (i.e. dirt, foam, plastic, rubber etc.) varies upon the extent of air separation conducted before the magnetic. Some processors seek the wire & circuit board content before shipping non-ferrous residue. The common non-ferrous metals are:

  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Brass
  • Zinc

Some DSSs incorporate technology to reach NFR’s constituents, collect and sell them to further downstream consumers.” For additional information visit: http://wp.wpi.edu/mpi/category/cr3news/

The recent study by the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, tells us as follows: “The aluminum industry and need to gather better data and information to obtain a comprehensive look at the recycling of end-of-life (ELV) auto aluminum. Aluminum’s demand is swelling in the automotive industry. The recycling of the product at the end of its life has not been clarified due to the intricacy of the automotive recycling supply chain and the lack of quality statistical information. This has led to concern about the future of the metal. Recycling is an important step for the sustainability of a metal such as aluminum since it drastically conserves both energy and vital resources.

A grave-to-gate process material flow analysis (PMFA) method is being used to measure the recycling rate of automotive aluminum/aluminum alloy units. Three processes contribute to the overall aluminum metallic loss to the landfill after an automobile begins the recycling pipeline. These include shredding, downstream separation, and scrap melting. Process specific surveys were distributed to two types of material collection operations, vehicle dismantlers and downstream separation systems (DSSs), as well as metal recovery operations (i.e. alternate smelters and re-melters) in order to evaluate the percentage of aluminum metal unit loss & process material flow quantities through the entire recycling pipeline of the commodity.

The quantities of material pushed through the system that makes it to the entrance of a new life cycle is not equated to an input value to the PMFA system since ELVs and auto aluminum scrap are exported often and these values are not tracked & measured for the full market in the US. This study doesn’t use a mass-balance analysis. The volume of ELVs that retire on an regular basis is only employed here to determine the span of the market share of each survey respondent and the portion of the respondents as a whole. The recycling rates are calculated by combining a material collection rate with a yield of applicable measures to the material that processes through the individual steps in the recycling pipeline.” The complete story is available here.

An editorial on September 5, 2016 by Charles Love in the Northwest Georgia News discussed the following: “We want a safe, clean and nice place to live. The community I speak of is North Rome; as a co-chair a group of great citizens through the North Rome Community Action Committee (NRCAC), we’ve seen a crime reduction recently of over 50%. Right now, because of the participation of our citizens, we are witnessing some great improvements. We’ve had several new businesses locate in our neighborhood; however, even with these gains, we have an issue of recycling that needs to be addressed. During the 80s and’90s, the city & country adopted recycling as a way to address environmental concerns and to be more efficient in waste reduction. The city of Rome entered the recycling business and located the primary center amid a residential community.

Recycling spread so quickly, the site outgrew the limited space and has become an eyesore in North Rome; now the rise in the cost of recycling and the reduction in profits made from selling recycled goods has made it problematic. The center in North Rome operates in the red, has limited personnel, uses inmate labor and is often unkempt, with trash scattered throughout the adjacent properties. There is talk about the trash on the streets brought on by the center. The NRCAC supports recycling and what it does to instill pride in our city, but is has become problematic to the property owners who want a nicer community. The NRCAC met recently and voted that the center needs to be relocated.

The NRCAC has presented concerns to the Solid Waste Commission. The cost, whatever it is, is far outweighed by the cost to the taxpayers in reduced home values in North Rome. Because new businesses may consider relocating in our community, like some have, the increased revenue should offset what is spent relocating the center. Who would want a recycling site within (2) blocks of where you live? Would you want to go out each day and see trash strewn and stacked outside where everyone can see it? We can continue the recycling initiative, as there is over $1.3M for the center in the 2013 SPLOST package yet to be used. It’s time for the leadership in Rome to pay attention and work together to address this issue. The full article is available here.

Megan Quinn posted a story on ISRI recently that shed some light on junk auto converters as follows: “Instead of selling recycled catalytic converters (CC’s) in bulk, recyclers are beginning get their units to refiners to get a better price. The variation in products, up-and-down prices, and some dishonest members of the industry make it difficult to truly master this unique recycling niche. Recyclers who collect CC’s know the platinum-group metals have significant value once a cat specialist or refiner buys the unit, but it takes often closely held knowledge to uncover whether a single unit is worth $400 or a meager $5. Recyclers, muffler shops, and car dismantlers have been collecting and selling CC’s since they became common in the mid-1970s to reduce vehicle emissions. Traditionally these outfits will gather a container full of CC’s and sell them to a cat specialist, who pays the collector based on the estimated value of the load prior to cutting each unit open to uncover the valuable PGMs inside. Recyclers are trying to skip the cat specialist middleman and work directly with the refiner, who will pay them for the exact value of their CC’s.

Cutting out the middleman doesn’t always generate profits. More-knowledgeable folks still easily take advantage of less-knowledgeable players in the platinum-group metals market. Sellers must learn as much about CC’s composition as they can and work with trustworthy partners. Recycling the PGMs inside CC’s hasn’t changed much. In the first stage of the recycling chain are the suppliers: peddlers, muffler garages, auto dismantlers, scrapyards, and vehicle manufacturers with production scrap. They can either sell the CC’s to cat specialists who open the units to retrieve and sell the PGM itself, or some other arrangement.

When collectors sell their CC’s outright to a cat specialist, the buyer typically uses an X-ray fluorescence analyzing device to estimate the approximate levels of PGMs in order to determine what they pay the collector. A refiner separates the platinum, palladium, and rhodium into their raw forms. Although collectors who work directly with refiners believe they are receiving fair and accurate pricing, it is hard to know for sure. Jay Robie, CEO of Phoenix Group Metals & Phoenix Automotive Cores says there isn’t a secret method to gathering the correct information to succeed, but there are companies with solid reputations that are willing to play by the rules.

Of the three main metals in CC’s, platinum is usually the most valuable, with palladium nest. Newer CC’s often have higher amounts of it than platinum because of its lower material cost. Rhodium, a rare metal used as a hardening catalyst for platinum and palladium, is typically present also. The industry is hoping for better prices in the future, low prices from the past year still affect the way people buy, sell, and process CC’s today.” The complete article is available here.

Our next segment is a follow-up from the California Dept. of Resources Recycling & Recovery 2016 TDA usage guide with this information: “Rock aggregate (crushed gravel) is the conventional medium used for septic system leach fields. The practice of gravel mining from riverbeds is being reduced due to possible environmental degradation. Environmental controls on rock quarries have heightened the operational expenses of these sites, and in many cases they have ceased operating. The result is that rock aggregate (RA) has become costly and problematic to obtain in many sites. TDA has many benefits that make it an excellent option to rock aggregate for drainage projects. TDA has higher permeability than drain rock aggregate and is much lower weight. Rather than potentially stirring up environmental problems by mining or producing rock aggregate, usage of TDA reuses a scrap product and keeps junk vehicle tires out of landfills. TDA may perform better than rock aggregate and in most instances does so at a reduced cost. TDA has been used successfully as a substitute for RA in drain fields for over 20 years in numerous states including AR, CA, CO, GA, IA, KS, NM, NY, NC, SC, TX, VT, and Virginia.

The push for the use of TDA has been largely financail. Depending on the operation and transportation expenses, construction savings for drain fields can fluctuate 10 to 90% when TDA is used in place of RA. Because the density of TDA is about 1/3 of that of gravel, only 1/3 of the tonnage of TDA is needed for the same size drain field. Many reports have indicated the extensive biological activity found in TDA media leach fields. Generally, these studies have shown that TDA fosters a healthy population of bacteria & other organisms that offer active biofilm treatment of the organic portion of the leachate in systems. The design of a leach field structure is quite similar to a project using traditional rock or gravel. The primary difference would be shifting the design to account for the variance in the engineering properties of TDA.

After excavation to create trenches for the leach field, the TDA would be utilized as a substitute for RA backfill. Since the TDA treats wastewater, the material should be clear of any contamination that could merge into the surrounding soil or groundwater. A separation block is used in leach site construction between the RA and the soil. The barrier is often made of treated paper for conventional RA systems; however, because the protruding wires in TDA could tear the paper, geotextile fabric is a solid alternative.” The full report is available here.

Understanding Tire Derived Aggregate

The CA Department of Resources Recycling & Recovery report on TDA informaed us of the following: “Tire-derived aggregate, or TDA, is a recyclable material derived from scrap auto tires. TDA was originally called shreds but with the advancement of standards and specifications that distinguished it from waste tires and other such derivatives, the name TDA was adopted to classify it as a standardized material. TDA has inherently good properties as a business material replacement for traditional aggregates like gravel and pumice-style rock, due to having less weight, high permeability, and a less costly material.

The Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) has outlined the practices for usage of scrap auto tires in civil engineering applications and describes the material as pieces of scrap tires that have a simple geometrical shape and are usually between 3-12” in size. TDA is made by treating tires with a shredder machine that uses rotating cutting shears and a conveyor and screening system. Shears (which have been sharpened) are needed to produce clean cuts without residual amounts of exposed wire. The 1st pass through the machine produces rougher shreds. Additional passes through the shredder and a screen system break the material down to smaller pieces. The overall principle holds that the smaller the material to be produced, then the more shredding is necessary. While there are many TDA vendors and many various process configurations, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the TDA material delivered meets the desired specs.

Coordinating with vendors to have steady supplies and compliance with the specs is a critical part of the project development process. Vendors usually produce a variety of shredded tire products to match demand and don’t typically maintain back-stock of material. Scrap tires are also processed into tire-derived fuel (TDF) and crumb rubber, two other varieties of processing is executed for these applications.” The full study is available here: http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/Publications/Documents/1545/201601545.pdf

Using Scrap Vehicle Tires

To junk cars in Ohio, particularly in the great Columbus area, give is a call at (614) 715-5005 today. Are you in the process of finally moving forward to junk your car for cash in the areas of Blendon, Blacklick, or Grove City?  Residents of Jefferson, Hilliard, and Obetz, OH that are confused about how to sell a junk car should have no worries. As with a reputable wrecked vehicle buyer, we can use a tow truck or flatbed for removal of a scrap vehicle in Jackson, New Albany, or Galloway, OH. Many of those with an old car are not aware that we are now among those who buys crashed cars in the local area.

Megan Quinn with sportsturf.com recently posted and article that told us the following: “In North America, about 98% of artificial turf fields use shredded recycled tire rubber, or crumb rubber. The granules occupy the space amid the synthetic grass to provide cushioning, assist in drainage, and help limit injuries. Some people have concerns about whether crumb rubber is safe. There are more than 70 studies reviews from health departments, higher education, and others worldwide. None of the results indicate this is a health or environmental problem. Some environmental factions worry about chemicals in tire rubber causing cancer or other health issues thus are asking schools, cities, and such to ban crumb rubber usage. Many organizations have looked into crumb rubber’s possible health and environmental concerns. Some research has considered if crumb rubber releases chemicals into the air. The studies have found evidence to not be present.

A 2013 study by Rutgers RW Johnson Medical School in NJ checked for exposure to trace metals, semi-volatile organic compounds, and hydrocarbons from crumb rubber and the turf fibers. Researchers measured this against factors in virtual body fluids representing digestive fluids, lung fluids, and perspiration. They found that PAHs were routinely below detection limits, and SVOCs were too low to quantify. Some metals were detected, but researchers said the concentrations were low and likely wouldn’t cause health issues.

In 2013, ChemRisk led a review for the Rubber Manufacturers Association to gauge the health & eco-concerns associated with the use of recycled scrap rubber on playgrounds & sports fields. While some of the ingredients used in tire manufacturing are considered to be possibly hazardous to human health, the potential for an athlete or childs exposure is very low. After reviewing studies from both supporters and opponents of crumb rubber, ChemRisk concludes that no adverse human health are likely to result from reusing tire material.

Al Garver, president of the Synthetic Turf Council, says STC encourages the calls for more technical studies and testing. Auto recyclers & rubber manufacturers thin science is on their side. Over 70 independent studies conducted over the have offered clear evidence. Recently in Edmonds, WA, they put an 18-month hold on installation of new fields made with the rubber infill from scrap tires. Residents protested the local school district’s plans to take out the old grass field at a school and put in synthetic turf. Patrick Doherty, of the city’s economic development & community services, says new field construction was underway when people learned the new field would have this rubber infill, so laborers completed the project prior to the protests to stop the installation. Due to community concern, other such projects were halted. Communities and organizers have a right to weight their options whether to use crumb rubber or something else on their fields. People should read the studies to make the decisions instead of listening to public perception.” The full article is available here.

Madlin Mekelburg posted an article in the June 2016 edition of the Texas Tribune titled ‘Proposed DMV Rules Could Put Firms Out of Business’ with the following details: “Sharon Fry, who has owned Fry Auto with her husband since 1998, spends much of her day talking to customers, explaining the various processes that customers find confusing. She says that they’ve developed relationships with that have gone on for decades. She finds it very rewarding to be able to help the public. Private title service outfits like Fry Auto charge an extra fee for services that customers could handle at their local county office. But Fry said her customers keep coming back, drawn to her shorter wait times and customer service.

The TX DMV Board is set to consider proposals to limit the fees charged by private titling companies. According to Fry, they cannot operate under this fee structure. Title service companies contract with county tax assessor-collectors and are deputized to perform functions usually handled by the counties. The industry only exists in Travis, Bexar, El Paso & Hidalgo county regions. They handle just 4% of all title & registration transactions state-wide. In 2013, the state Legislature ordered the DMV to figure how much private title firms deputized by counties should be able to charge for services. The DMV’s 1st proposal prevented the companies from charging a fee over $5 for registrations and $15 for title services. It invoked a flood of public response, including from some such businesses who said those limits were unreasonable. Bill Aleshire, a TX-based attorney who represents Fry’s Auto and ten other such firms says the rules would destroy these companies. He describes it as a state agency taking over local government & the private sector that has existed for years and worked fine. DMV officials also an alternative proposal in hopes of easing concerns.

The new proposal would heighten the cap to $10 for registrations & $20 for title activity. Jeremiah Kuntz, a director of the department says with those scenarios, those companies should be profitable; whether or not they choose to go out of business is still their decision. At a recent meeting, the board could choose to adopt the department’s original offer along with its new recommendations or make different changes. While they don’t make up a significant percentage of statewide services, private titling companies have a noticeable impact in the counties they operate in. Private title companies handle 20% of Bexar County’s registrations and 30% of the title work.

Along with working with the regulations on these title service companies, the DMV board will also begin to issue a proposal to establish a central web vehicle registration system for renewals run by the state instead of the counties. This proposal would also reduce prices for online registration renewals while increasing the cost of those done in person or via the mail. Several counties have expressed concern that the new online system will redirect funds from the county to the state. They also criticized the increase in the fee for in-person renewals or those submitted through the mail. Governor Abbott’s office expressed some of those concerns. The DMV originally proposed adding a $5 processing & handling fee to renewals done in person or via mail. The department recently put forth new suggestions that included dropping the fee by 25 cents. DMV officials cited Abbott as an agent in the change.” The full article is available at this link.

As we move onward with the latest news and information from the world of scrap autos, we illustrate the (6) steps in scrapping a car.

  1. Acceptance of the reality that your vehicle has reached the ended of its useful life. The reasons tend to be that the costs of fixing the car exceed the value of the vehicle if it were in running condition; or, that too much time has passed since the car was parked with the intention of repairing it and you need it removed.
  2. Locate the vehicle title and ID, since these items are necessary in Ohio to transfer ownership. Also at this time you confirm the year, make and model of the car to be salvaged.
  3. Determining who will buy and scrap the car for you. Typically you will contact several junk car hauling outfits for pricing and details. We recommend a Google search to identify the options.
  4. Schedule and coordinate a time for the exchange to take place (cash for the car). The listed owner on the title will need to be present, and usually allowing for a couple hour “window” of time is recommended i.e. 10AM-12PM.
  5. Remove any personal items that you need to from the scrap vehicle.
  6. When the scrap vehicle removal driver arrives he should give you a receipt or bill of sale to document the completion of the transaction.

Apparently the US government is playing “watchdog” on the auto lending industry lately. In the July 11, 2016 edition of the WSJ, Andrew Ackerman posted a story titled ‘U.S. Regulator Flags Auto-Lending Risks’ with the following details: “A U.S. banking representative warned about growing credit risk in the automobile-lending sector, raising the possibility of fresh regulatory pressure in the area. The Office of the Comptroller, which oversees large national banks which includes many of the biggest banking firms in the U.S., highlighted the risks in its bi-annual report.

The OCC said auto-lending risk is heightening “because of notable & unprecedented growth across all types of lenders. As banks have fought for market share, some banks have gone with less stringent underwriting standards, the report said. The report indicated the role of indirect auto lending, in which banks offer cash to auto dealerships, who in turn lend to consumers. The report said indirect lending reflects “an area of significant fair lending risk” amid fast growth. Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Thomas Curry had raised the red flag once before about auto lending, making an analogy between it and the mortgage crisis.

Automotive lending has spiked in recent years with historically lower interest rates, inexpensive gas and stronger consumer demand. Auto loans even performed pretty well during the financial crisis, which market observers have viewed as a sign that the loans are safe because even low income households must pay for transportation. Auto lenders also have an easier time obtaining collateral on a past due auto loan—by repossessing the vehicle—than they do foreclosing on a house covered by a failing mortgage.” The complete article is available at this link.

When you receive money for a scrap car in Riverlea, Urbancrest, or Georgesville, the car can be quickly hauled away. Nobody in the neighborhood likely wants to see a broken down car sitting around and would prefer old car removal. People that buy junk cars in the greater Columbus area are standing by to provide you a quote. Our practices have environmentally related benefits such as reducing air pollution and water pollution.

In a July 8, 2016 article by Mónica Ortiz Uribe on Fronteras titled ‘America’s Auto Rejects Are Revived And Resold In Mexico’ we learned the following: “Mexico is making it harder to import old cars from the U.S., angering many that handle imports at the border who specialize in the refurbishing and resale of America’s 4-wheeled rejects. Recently, a sorry parade of damaged up cars sat bumper to bumper near a remote border crossing outside El Paso, TX. Many of them were lined up farther than the eye could see. Some had broken windshields and headlights, while others had dents on the hoods held shut by bungie cords. All were waiting near the border to cross into Mexico. He and other importers said Mexican customs agents abruptly reduced their hours and the number of cars they let through beginning in mid-June. This move has slowed an entire economic sector that’s long thrived. In the last 10 years Mexico received more than 7M used cars from the U.S.

The line of these clunkers at ports of entry in CA and TX has sparked chaos. Last month in Ciudad Juárez an angry group of importers blocked some commercial traffic coming into Mexico for a few hours. At a border crossing south of San Diego, the Tijuana Chamber counted as many as 4,000K waiting to enter. Eloisa Talavera, a Congresswoman the Mexican customs agency says the agency was tracking down on illegal imports— cars with values that are intentionally underestimated to avoid taxes or cars with fake emissions reports.

The Fronteras Desk contacted Mexican customs several times but didn’t get a response regarding why the agency had limited its hours and number of imports at the border, a move that’s negatively affected those who do business legally. Importers think customs is caving into pressure from the Mexican domestic auto manufacturing industry. In Mexico, new car sales are falling behind used car sales. While new car sales volume has remained relatively slow in Mexico over the last decade, auto manufacturing production has heightened in recent years. Today, Mexico is the area’s top auto exporter. Almost every significant brand has a factory there, such as Ford, Nissan and BMW. In the last (5) years Mexico exported 14M cars, mostly to the U.S. Eduardo Solis, president of Mexico’s Auto Manufacturer’s Association, says they are pressuring Mexican authorities to go after illegal car imports.

Solis says that too much trash from the U.S. ends up on our streets; if a car isn’t fit to be driven in the U.S., it shouldn’t be allowed on Mexico’s either. At a neighborhood body shop in Juárez, a worker repainted an imported Chevy Silverado. Other cars in the shop still had US registration stickers. Juan Flores, 2nd generation salesman, has been selling U.S. imports for many years. He says they make car ownership a reality for lower-wage Mexicans who don’t have access to lenders. Like other import salesman, Flores is paid for these cars in U.S. dollars, and right now the Mexican peso is weak.” The full article is here: http://www.fronterasdesk.org/content/10360/americas-auto-rejects-are-revived-and-resold-mexico

Junk Recycling Issue

When deciding where to go to get cash for scrap vehicles, Columbus Scrap Cars is a great spot. Those residing in Dublin, Valleyview, and Whitehall should know that they can get cash for a car 6 days a week. We are happy to offer junk car hauler services in Montgomery, Brice, and Flint. Approximately how much money for a junk car is typically offered for a scrap vehicle in Westerville, Huber Ridge, or Truro, OH? We are now a salvage vehicle hauler in the regions of Madison, Gahanna, and Franklin, OH. Taking steps in the right direction for protecting our environment is worthwhile; therefore, contact us for eco-friendly auto recycling.

Josh Baugh posted an article titled ‘Trash found in recycling bin will result in a $25 fine’ in the July 6, 2016 edition of the San Antonio Express News with the following info: “Over the past few days, the 300K+ residential customers of the city’s Waste Management Department have received letters explaining that they could face fines of $25 for placing trash in the blue recycling units. Residents who put trash in these bins could see fines in their monthly CPS Energy bills. There was some outrage on social media.

About 45% of the department’s customers now have green cans for organics, and rollout for that program will be completed by mid-2017. In order to become more environmentally responsible, the city has set a goal of diverting about 60% of waste from landfills by 2025. This means increasing the amount of the items which can be recycled. Organic materials like grass and tree branches go into the green carts (you can also put cardboard boxes in there). Those organics are turned into mulch. Plastics, papers and others with the “recycle” emblem go in the blue cart. Trash that can’t go in the blue or green carts goes into the brown. Like your hypodermic needles, full bags of trash, dirty diapers etc. The people in charge of sorting recycling materials from the blue carts have found several shark heads and deer carcasses. The sorting crews are also pulling hundreds of lbs. of dirty diapers each hour from the recycling stream. About 23% of the recycling items are contaminated, and the city wants to be at less than 15%.

Waste-management workers have been trying to educate residents on which bin to use for these discarded items. Councilman Rey Saldaña says the city has taken the “carrot-and stick” approach in attempting to reduce recycling contamination — which both spoils loads of otherwise recyclable material & poses health hazards for the employees sorting the trash. The councilman says the issue isn’t relegated to a certain side of town — it seems to be occurring everywhere. Inspection teams have been working to identify problem carts & inform their owners. They will be getting a warning in the form of a hang-tag on the bins. Inspectors will then re-check whether the problem persists. If they’re repeatedly using their blue carts for improper items, then they will document the infraction — with pictures and a letter. Fines will be added on to monthly bills.

City leaders say they’re not targeting the customers who accidentally place the wrong kind of plastic in the carts. They’re going after the people who are dropping loads diapers, animals and other items that clearly are not recyclable. Some people have stated they won’t pay a fine for items that someone else may place in their bins after placed on the curbs. Tiffany Edmonds, a spokesperson for the waste department, suggests that people who are concerned that this may occur should put their trash out on the morning of their pickup. The $25 fines won’t generate much revenue for the department, Edmonds said. The fines cover the costs of sending out a garbage truck to pick up the contaminated loads.. Saldaña said he knows people will make occasional mistakes. Occasionally, we’ll put something in the wrong bin. Those people should not expect to be ticketed.” The full story is available here.

A recent story on Used Car News titled ‘Women Warming Up to Used Cars’ with the following information: “Jumpstart Auto Group released an auto shopper study in collaboration with Ipsos Connect. This report identifies new trends in the auto-shopping process for various demographics, including women, millennials, as well as Asian and Hispanic shoppers. The research indicates that millennials are not only interested in purchasing cars, but they are also cycling in-market more frequently due to changes in life stages (four in 10 shoppers buy a new car every three years vs. nearly six out of 10 millennials). Online auto buying decisions has shortened their decision-making time to a 30-day process. 3/4 of millennials now take (4) weeks or less when shopping for a car and 88% research online throughout the full process.

Women are an important audience for both dealers and manufacturing, considering they influence 80% of all transactions. They rely heavily on separate research and reviews and are more likely to view Consumer Reports than any other group. Women place a greater value on practical needs such as passenger seating, comfort, and safety, while remaining thrifty. Although they are mostly new-car buyers, they show more willingness to consider used if it means they’re going to get more for their money compared to men. Asian & Hispanic shoppers place a greater value on brands of cars that are more popular or recognizable, as well as those with alternative fueling options. Overall purchase pricing is important to Asian shoppers, but they are more willing to increase their monthly payment if they feel the value is there. Hispanic auto buyers seem to value the purchase price over than monthly payment, but the payment is a stronger consideration for them than any other group.

Asian consumers tend to subscribe to a ‘you get what you pay for’ mentality that places a high emphasis on quality. Hispanic shoppers tend to purchase more new vehicles than used, and they often hold onto a vehicle and pass it down to a family member instead of trading it in, making trade-in deals less attractive to this group.” The full article is available here.

What is the price for a damaged car typically in the areas of Obetz, Jackson, or New Albany? Junk automobiles can be a potential problem since they may contain chemicals such as lead, mercury and asbestos.

In a July 5, 2016 Boston Globe article titled ‘Women gearing up for careers in the auto industry’ by Katie Johnston we learned the following: “Samantha Briody works behind the parts counter at AutoZone. Briody, 21, recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in automotive management from the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston, and just began new position as a parts specialist at a VW dealership in Norwood. Gender stereotypes is likely to remain part of her job; the number of women taking auto classes has remained steady or risen in schools, those working as mechanics and in auto component sales has declined. Technicians are in demand and women the auto industry is doing more to attract women to the field.

The Automotive Women’s Alliance Foundation and the Car Care Council Women’s Board have attracted more sponsors recently, allowing them to increase the quantity of scholarships they award. GM is the 1st major auto company to have a female chief executive and has plans to recruit and better support female employees. Auto employers who come to the Benjamin Franklin Institute are now seeking out women, especially to interact with customers. With women making 80% of car-buying decisions, according to the research firm Frost & Sullivan, it makes sense to have more working in the industry.

Women make up only about 10% of approximately 150 automotive students at the institute, and to combat this lack of community, they recently helped form a women’s group where students discuss discrimination, hear from women in the industry, and travel to trade shows. Women at the school may be far outnumbered, but they are serious about their education. Once they get out into the male-dominated auto workforce, many don’t last. The share of female mechanics has fallen by around 3% over the past 20 years, according to the Bureau of Labors. In wholesale & retail auto components, the percentage of females has also. The number of women in management positions in the auto industry has also fallen.

This decline reflects an overall decline in the number of women in traditionally male fields such as agriculture, coal mining, & manufacturing. The reason for this, said Anna Beninger, director of research at Catalyst Inc., is company culture. The gender gap is not just in blue-collar jobs. Women who enter STEM fields — science, technology, engineering, & math — often start in lower-level positions and earn less money than men. Of those who do go into automotive, high tech, manufacturing, and other male-dominated fields, 53% left to work in another industry — compared to 31% of men — because they feel like outsiders, lack female mentors, and experience both overt & unconscious discrimination.

In some areas of the auto industry more female workers are present such as in automobile sales. Diane Larson helped her husband open Larson’s Service years ago and took over the business after he passed away in 2008. When she was at a trade show with a 21-year-old guy of another shop owner a few years ago, vendors automatically directed their questions to him. But her shop is thriving, due in part to the new ways she runs it. Customers come to her service station two times per year for prescheduled checkups, similar to a dental office. This brings in repeat business and keeps customer cars from breaking down. Incorporating women’s ideas are good for the business, says Larson, who is will soon have a female shop manager.” The full article is available at: https://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2016/07/04/women-gearing-for-careers-auto-industry/7ineRe27hnYmTsB3OwfQXO/story.html

Automobile Diesel Update

Columbus Scrap Cars is the area’s premier salvage car buyer and wrecked vehicle buyer. What is the price for a junk car in Washington, Dublin, or Valleyview? What is a junk car worth in Montgomery, Brice, or Flint, Ohio? Who buys crashed cars and other unwanted vehicles in the areas of Westerville, Huber Ridge, or Truro? Our “green” practices that we use when buying junk vehicles in Franklin, Grandview Heights, and Blendon preserve precious resources for the futures generations that will support the environment.

Brian Moody of Autotrader.com recently posted a story titled ‘Why Diesels Were About to be Obsolete Anyway’ with the following info: “As Volkswagen reaches agreement for US owners, I was driving a new 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The Passat is a mid-sized sedan with lots of nice features and Apple CarPlay — in other words, a great car for my personal tastes. I think all diesel powered passenger cars are about to fade away rather than burn out. The TDI versions of the Jetta, the Passat and the Touareg are excellent vehicles; the diesel motor means lots of lower-end power, generally expressed as torque. To the average person, that equals rapid acceleration. Then there’s the excellent fuel economy: By 2015, cars such as the VW Passat TDI were getting estimates of 45 MPG on the highway from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — that fuel economy is close to what hybrids get. The problem is that diesel engines added cost to the purchase price of the car — for a Jetta, it was about $2,500. VW’s gas-powered engines (often called TSI) have been slowly gaining ground on the diesels in terms of power & fuel economy for years now.

Compared to the non-turbo powered cars, the TDI cars were amazing, fun, fast, plus they got spectacular fuel-economy. Jump ahead a few years, and the 2016 Jetta with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine is good for 33 mpg in combined city & highway driving, or 28 mpg city/40 mpg hwy. The turbo-versions of cars like the Passat and Jetta are actually fun to drive, with plenty of power. In the Passat, the 1.8L turbo-charged engine is 170 horsepower. The rest of us are starting to see that maybe diesel engines aren’t the miracle we thought. Diesel powered Peugeots and Hyundai’s have been leading drivers all over the world down this path for decades, focusing on CO2 emissions and MPG. Some of the particulate matter that the diesel powered cars emit aren’t eco-friendly. France is slowly beginning to phase out diesel cars, and the mayor of London thinks that an additional tax for diesel vehicles is a good idea because of the pollution. Based on the performance and mpg of the 2016 Passat and Jetta, my guess is that the diesel-powered VWs (and other brands) are going to stop making sense by mid-2017.” The full article is available at this link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brian-moody/why-diesels-were-about-to_b_10714328.html

In the June 21, 2016 edition of Recycling Today, an article titled ‘Arizona auto recycler reimbursed for off-target police raid’ was posted with the following news: “The Hendrix Salvage Company in Phoenix, AZ was the target of a suspected auto theft plot and was raided by city and state authorities in 2013. This raid was covered by reported by media outlets, including RT. Hendrix and its owners recently were cleared of the charges, and more than (2) years later Hendrix has announced an agreement with the city and state designed in part to help the firm restore its reputation. According to attorneys with Simpson P.C., Hendrix accepted $180K from the city of Phoenix & the state of Arizona in order to settle a suit the organization filed after no charges resulted from the raid.

The raid was part of an sting of regional salvage yards known at the time as “Operation Tin Man.” Authorities raided the salvage yards in 2013, charging some staff for allegedly trafficking in stolen property. Officers seized bank accounts and equipment from Hendrix, and law enforcement authorities alerted regional media outlets in advance so they could publicize the raids. Authorities later conducted a press conference to make criminal allegations against some Hendrix family members.” According to their attorneys, investigators got it wrong. No criminal charges were ever filed against owners Lyle or Ronnie Hendrix nor against any Hendrix Salvage Company employee. All of Hendrix’ seized equipment & accounts were ultimately brought back to the firm in 2014.

Hendrix Salvage is a commercial auto recycler that has been doing business in the area for more than 15 years and always had been a friend to the PD and the community. The investigators should have just talked with us instead of rushing in with guns & taking everything. The state began forfeiture proceedings in January 2014, but those ended with a dismissal and the property being returned. Hendrix only wanted an apology, a simple apology, and that would have been the end of it.  Instead, Forrester says, when no apology was forthcoming, the subsequent settlement even the playing field.” The complete article is available here.

Jessica Flores of FOX 10 reported that Lyle Hendrix described the raid as “It was kind of like an army style raid, they threw a lot of people on the ground, marched them outside & confiscated everything in the yard and the equipment.” Her article is available here.

Recycled junk tires from cars can be shredded up and used in asphalt for roads or in other various manufactured products—even as fuel for energy. When dumped as litter in the local areas, they pose both a fire risk and a human health risk as they become a fertile area for mosquitos to breed.

Governor Rick Snyder’s program to double the state’s residential recycling percentage to 30%. They fund types of projects that provide future uses for old tires: Road projects are now using rubberized asphalt in construction & repair projects to Michigan roadways. Rubber-modified asphalt creates a pavement that is designed be longer-lasting and provide better noise reduction and skid control and visibility in rain and snow. Scrap auto tires used in construction-related projects must come from MI sources.  Research and development is underway to determine better ways to use scrap tire rubber into asphalt and concrete, improving the performance of the materials. Equipment-related developments are escalating for using scrap tires, and find new ways to create several commodities from scrap tires and increasing current product generation. Examples of current products include floor tiling, footwear and rubber-compounded feedstock for injection & blow molding.

A July 9, 2016 article in the New Haven Register authored by Luther Turmelle titled ‘Electric vehicle program in Connecticut gets infusion of cash’ told us the following: “A Connecticut-based incentive program to encourage more purchases of electric vehicles is getting a new flow of cash. According to Rob Klee, commissioner of the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, The CT Hydrogen & Electric Automobile Purchase Rebate (CHEAPR) program is getting $1M.

Klee says it’s the perfect time to think about the advantages offered by EVs. One of the larger advantages is the rebate available which offers up to $3K for those who buy or lease an eligible vehicle. Without the new funding, the CHEAPR program was projected to run out of money by July. The CHEAPR program was launched in May 2015 using state funds as part of an agreement to allow Northeast Utilities to merge with MA-based NSTAR and form what is known as Eversource Energy. A 2nd wave of money from the state’s merger agreement with the utilities was in addition to the incentive program.

Since its launch, the program delivered just over $1.5 million for the purchase or lease of over 600 new vehicles. A total of 159 fully electric vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF, as well as 467 plug-in style cars that have range extending or hybrid capabilities such the Chevy Volt were sold. David Stevens, owner of Stevens Ford, said he was pleased to hear that CT was offering additional funding to the program.  Stevens Ford is one of the many dealers offering vehicles in the program.

Rich Ogurick, chairman of Cheshire’s Energy Commission, says locating a charging station, which has outlets for (2) vehicles, was difficult. Eric Richter, VP of Property Management for Philips Edison, said they plan to install fifty of these in the next year. Richter says that those who already have EVs can recharge their cars at zero cost for the next (3) years if they use the station outside Big Y.

The incentive program is administered through the EVConnecticut, an agreement between DEEP and the state DOT. The vehicle rebates from the CHEAPR program function on a sliding scale. The maximum rebate amount of $3,000 is available for lease or purchase of EVs with the best battery capacity. Other offerings include $1,500 and $750 for electric vehicles that travel shorter distances. In the June 3, 2016 edition of WFYI Indianapolis an article titled ‘Marion County Mosquito Control’s Tire Recycling Day Is June 11’ was posted as follows: “The Marion County Department of Public Health has a Mosquito Control program, which encourages people to scrap unused tires amid a Tire Recycle Day on Saturday, 06/11 from 8 am to 4 pm. One of the simplest means to curb the mosquito population is to minimize regions of standing water where mosquitos tend to breed. Abandoned vehicle tires can gather water and become a place for mosquitoes to lay eggs. In partnership with Meineke Car Care, this tire recycling event collects used vehicle tires from Marion County residents at zero cost.  They will accept a maximum of (6) tires each. This event is for individuals and not for use by tire-related retailers or auto scrap yards. All picked up tires will be properly recycled.

Matt Sinsko, coordinator of the MCDPH Mosquito Control program says that this is one significant means for people to become involved in making their neighborhoods healthier places. In addition to the reduction of clutter, getting rid of old tires helps to control the possible spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-based diseases.” The complete article is here: http://www.wfyi.org/news/articles/marion-county-mosquito-controls-tire-recycling-day-is-june-11

On June 1, 2016 an article titled ‘Abandoned vehicles litter roadways’ by Nancy Cook was posted on West Hawaii Today with the following information: “Abandoned vehicles dumped on the sides of Mamalahoa Hwy & elsewhere across the island are slowly disappearing, thanks to a new contract signed by Hawaii County. The news is a huge relief to Shirlee Shumway, who for six months has noticed many cars beginning to appear on the roadside. The county began tagging the abandoned vehicles, then removing them. Individuals were stripping the valuable components from the cars at night. According to Shumway, one car, covered in a silver tarp, had been on the Mamalahoa Highway, for 10 months. The car had no engine and wasn’t parked on private property–the tarp was old & held in place by lava rocks.

A decrease in scrap metal prices & the loss of markets in China over the past year contributed to a drop in county recycling efforts. But county Environmental Director Bobby Jean Todd says the new contracts with haulers are moving the cars off the roadside & onto county property. The cars collected by a contracted junk hauler are sold at auctions or they’re held at the county’s (2) car yards to be sent off for recycling. Haulers receive between $58 and $75 per car, plus $4.50 to $7.50 a mile to transport the abandoned vehicles. On public roadways, junk automobiles may be removed by calling the Hawaii PD.” The full article can be viewed at this link http://westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-news/abandoned-vehicles-litter-roadways

Jeff Daniels of CNBC released a story titled ‘Auto insurance rate rises at fastest rate in almost thirteen years’ with the following insight: “Americans are driving more as a result of rising employment & cheap gas; this also means they are getting into more accidents — which leads to higher insurance rates. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says approximately 87% of drivers engage in at least one risky behavior such as using cell phones or not wearing seat belts. Jim Lynch, chief actuary of the Insurance Institute feels that the number of accidents has risen; at the same time, the size of claims has been rising. The size of claims is trending higher & affecting auto insurers. Rising costs for medical care, auto repair and replacement auto parts components are contributing.

The US government released its auto insurance-related Consumer Price Index (CPI) data —showing prices increased 6% year-to-year in April. Medical bills seem to be crazy–as the costs rose especially for bodily injury. From 2005 to 2013, the average cost for bodily injury claims rose 32%. A report last year from KPMG suggests that the autonomous vehicles under development by Google and others may lower auto insurance prices. One of the largest rate increases this year among the major auto insurers was Allstate’s average 25% increase in the state of Georgia. Allstate said traffic fatalities increased 21% in GA in 2015, the first annual increase after a decade of consecutive decreases. Also, the number of miles driven on GA roads & highways grew well above the national average.” The full article is available here: http://www.cnbc.com/

On May 25, 2016 Marc Gunther of Green Biz authored an article titled ‘Is automobile fuel economy hitting a dead end’ with the following information: “Five years ago, Barack Obama announced an agreement to boost fuel economy & reduce greenhouse gas emissions for cars and trucks; the goal is by 2025 to have average fuel economy of 55 MPG. The prediction that these rules would save over a trillion in overall fuel costs. The government attempt to curb climate emissions & oil imports is strong. The government’s calculations take into consideration adjustments & credits from electric cars, flex-fuel vehicles, energy-efficient air conditioning & solar panels. Automakers get credits for exceeding the standards in which can be banked & traded, creating a million dollar market.

Cheap gas makes it hard to achieve fleet-wide efficiency and emission reductions because the sales of trucks & SUVs are surging. Perhaps most important, the rules are to be reviewed during a mid-term evaluation that begins in June and concluded in April 2018, long after the next president can influence the policy. At stake is nothing less than Obama’s legacy regarding climate change. Manufacturers have introduced lighter materials, turbo engines, new transmissions, additional smaller engines and more aerodynamic options. These improvements may still fall short of the administration’s projections.

In the US, the fuel economy for all cars and light trucks from the 2014 model years was 24.3 mpg, according to EPA, using the mileage estimates. But for CAFE purposes, the average for 2014 was about 31 MPG after all the regulatory credits and adjustments were considered. The good news: That 24.3-mpg average is the highest level recorded, up by about 26% since 2004. The not-so-good news:  it was the same from the 2013 model year. That’s because fuel prices began their large decline through 2014. Since then, predictably, buying patterns dwindled among small cars, hybrids & electric vehicles and toward SUVs & trucks. This has slowed the fleet-wide progress even as most cars have become more fuel efficient.

One reason consumers choose gas-powered engines over alternative powertrains, such as hybrids, is that gas-powered engines have become more efficient. But another reason, according to the Safe Climate Campaign, is the $15B in advertising spent from the auto industry that year.

Chrysler has been Tesla’s biggest customer. At first glance, it may seem peculiar to have Chrysler buyers subsidize the purchases of Tesla’s $100,000 luxury cars, but that’s the way CAFE is designed to work. The idea is to penalize companies that sell less-efficient vehicles, reward innovation, and reduce the price of cleaner, more efficient cars.

The standards require fuel consumption and emissions to fall by about 50% of 2012 levels by 2025. When mid-term review of CAFE begins this summer, automakers are expected to seek credits for safety improvements, such as autonomous braking, which, in theory, will prevent accidents, reduce congestion and thus save energy & limit emissions. Environmentalists want tougher rules. Would it be easier to impose a price on carbon or raise gasoline taxes? This would steer consumers to buy more efficient cars, drive less and walk, bike or take public transport instead. By contrast, CAFE doesn’t account for the so-called “rebound effect”, that some efficiency gains are offset by more usage. If cars are at 40 MPG, that people would drive more.” The complete article is available here.

Our next topic discusses the Ford Motor Company’s new initiative to further their sustainable manufacturing processes.

On May 17, 2016 Jessica Lyons Hardcastle composed an article on Environmental Leader titled ‘Ford Using Captured Carbon to Make Plastic Car Components’ with the following information: “Ford, the automaker, is developing new foam & plastic car components produced from carbon dioxide. It expects these newer biomaterials, produced by Novomer to be in Ford’s production vehicles within the next (5) years. The foam, made with up to approximately 50% CO2-based polyols, may be used in seating and under-hood applications. This could lead to a reduction in petroleum use by more than 600M lbs. annually, Ford says.

Ford started working with several companies, suppliers & colleges and universities in 2013 to find uses for captured CO2. Among them is Novomer, a NY-based company that uses carbon dioxide captured from its manufacturing plants to produce materials. Through a unique system of conversions, Novomer delivers a polymer than can be constructed into a variety of recyclable materials including foam & plastic. Plastic-related manufacturing accounts for nearly 4% of the world’s oil use, according to an organization known as the British Plastic Federation. Ford says it hopes this new bio-plastic will help obtain the better long-term goals to minimize global warming set in the Paris climate agreement. The automaker uses various sustainable materials in its production. In North America, soy foam is already used in every Ford vehicle. Coconut fiber for backing in trunk liners; recycled tires & soy are in gaskets for mirrors; recycled T-shirts and jean denim go into carpeting; and recycled plastic bottles (such as used for water) become Repreve fabric used in the 2016 F-150.” The complete story is available at https://www.environmentalleader.com/2016/05/17/ford-using-captured-carbon-to-make-plastic-car-parts/

The following is our continuing coverage of how scrap and recycled plastic-related materials are being increasingly used in never vehicles.

“The plastics of today have revolutionized the exterior of auto bodies. Products such as bumpers and door panels are using light-weight plastic to provide better gas mileage and allow designers and engineers increased freedom to develop innovative concepts not otherwise possible. Traditional metal alloys have been used for decades, but plastic components ae resistant to dents, dings, chips and corrosion. Plastics used for auto body exteriors allow manufacturing to adopt modular-like assembly practices, low production costs, better energy management, and sleeker, more aerodynamic options. Carbon fiber has allowed for newer exterior part designs given its structural integrity, strength and performance.

Plastics are found throughout the interior of modern cars as well, proving to be a good material for creating comfortability, durability, and aesthetically pleasing interior applications, while reducing road noise and vibration levels detected in the interior of the car. The flexibility of the product helps manufacturers to build innovative, integral single-type pieces and lighter-weight components. Much of the plastic—and recycled plastics—in vehicles today are out of sight, playing a key role in the car’s powertrain, cushioning, soundproofing and such. Additionally, plastic-related resins are used in various systems found in the car, including:

  • „ Safety-related components, such as airbags & restraints
  • „ Components of the vehicle electrical system
  • „ Improved chassis designs, with noise, vibration and harshness enhancements
  • „ The vehicle powertrains
  • „ The critical fuel systems

The extent of automobile design influenced by plastic is seen in the components by International Automotive Components (IAC), a worldly manufacturer with many facilities and design and tech sites.” The full report is here.

On May 3, 2016 Alyana Gomez posted a story on NBC Connecticut titled ‘Know How to Protect Your Used Car Purchase’ explaining the following: “NBC CT found several laws most consumers didn’t know about relating to buying a used car. Maria Hart, a single mother, says she feels taken advantage of. Hart purchased a 2008 Nissan Altima. It looked shiny and new and she paid $7.5K for it at Empire Auto. A couple days after, the brakes were squeaking & grinding. Hart said Empire told her that the problem was fixed. The car returned (6) times over the course of (5) months. She dealt with a damaged catalytic converter, a bad transmission, and then again leaks in the new transmission. Frustrated, Ms. Hart complained to the Better Business Bureau.

The manager at Empire says the car was sold in “as is” condition. According to CT law, dealers have the right to sell a vehicle as-is if the car over (6) years old or bought for under $3K. This car was (8) eight years old; however, according to Dan Blinn with a Consumer Law Group, the dealer is required to conduct a comprehensive safety check and give the customer certification as such. Blinn says if dealers fail to provide this documentation, it is considered an unfair trade practice, subject to a $500 fine. Dan Blinn also says each car must pass emissions testing and that CT law requires dealers to allow an independent mechanical inspection per request. The full article is available here.

Our next story discusses a new auto-related recycling innovation. On April 13, 2016 an article in Plastics Technology titled ‘GM Recycles Water Bottles to Produce Chevy Equinox Part’ was posted with the following info: “The Detroit auto giant is recycling employees’ water bottles into noise-reducing fabric insulation that covers the Chevy Equinox engine. GM says that while all its sites recycle their water bottles, for this project, the bottles collected at five sites are now funneled into its DYP project, where businesses collaborate to give them a 2nd use in life. The air-filtration components are used in GM facilities to protect the quality of the air; and the insulation goes into coats that transform into sleeping bags.

John Bradburn, GM global manager of waste reduction say viewing waste as a valuable resource that can be plugged into your operations or products is great. He is rethinking the process and finding more sustainable ways to manufacture products & contribute to communities. GM says that sourcing recycled material provides the same costs while also saving energy & reducing waste.

Each partner engaged in this project brings specific capabilities. Hamtramck Recycling bails the plastic bottles. Clean Tech Inc. washes them and converts them to flake. Unifi Inc. turns the bottle flake into a resin. Palmetto Synthetics takes the resin to create fibers and William T. Burnett & Co. processes the fibers into various types of fleece, serving all several applications.

  • Rogers Foam Corp. cuts the fleece and attaches it into the nylon pad for the Chevrolet Equinox engine. The component helps deaden engine noise to deliver a quiet ride.
  • Filtration Services Group works with New Life Center, a nonprofit, to make the panels for air filtration, which is then sent to GM facilities.
  • The coat insulation is sent to Carhartt, a workwear company, to be cut to size.

GM uses recycled content in many of its vehicles. Cardboard from various plants is recycled into a sound-deadening material in the Buick Verano; plastic caps & shipping aids are mixed with other materials to make radiator components for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra; and tires from Milford Proving Ground are shredded and reused in the manufacturing of air and water baffles for a various GM cars.” The complete story is available at this link.

An article posted on Waste Dive on April 8, 2016 by Arlene Karidis titled ‘Ohio squashes $100M recycling facility deal with Team Gemini’ informed us of the following: “The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) has canceled a $100M initiative that would have brought a new recycling facility and a waste-to-energy site to Franklin County. Team Gemini, a Florida-based outfit, who was to build the facility, reportedly defaulted on rent and has suspended the project.

The plan, in the works for three years and slated for completion in June, called for Team Gemini to receive and buy recyclables from SWACO, sell them, and send the balance to a landfill. In addition to the rent problem, there were other concerns including the feasibility on this size or scale. Ty Marsh, SWACO’s executive director, says that SWACO has taken possession of the property and is working to figure out a plan.

Deals are made and deals fall through, especially with capital-intensive projects dependent on tough recycling markets. Even existing MRFs are shutting down—including those owned and operated by industry giants like Waste Management. This has been an industry trend for over three years, with devalued materials and higher operating costs driving the plant shut downs. In Ohio, Team Gemini couldn’t raise the money to build the large facility. Mr. Marsh further said that the failure of the Gemini project in no way diminishes interest in leveraging the waste that’s generated in Franklin County for greater economic opportunity. SWACO will continue to work to extend the Franklin County landfill’s life without expanding its size—a goal that the Authority set fairly recently, but now may have trouble achieving.” Additional details on this issue are available at this link.
