In the June 3, 2016 edition of WFYI Indianapolis an article titled ‘Marion County Mosquito Control’s Tire Recycling Day Is June 11’ was posted as follows: “The Marion County Department of Public Health has a Mosquito Control program, which encourages people to scrap unused tires amid a Tire Recycle Day on Saturday, 06/11 from 8 am to 4 pm. One of the simplest means to curb the mosquito population is to minimize regions of standing water where mosquitos tend to breed. Abandoned vehicle tires can gather water and become a place for mosquitoes to lay eggs. In partnership with Meineke Car Care, this tire recycling event collects used vehicle tires from Marion County residents at zero cost. They will accept a maximum of (6) tires each. This event is for individuals and not for use by tire-related retailers or auto scrap yards. All picked up tires will be properly recycled.
Matt Sinsko, coordinator of the MCDPH Mosquito Control program says that this is one significant means for people to become involved in making their neighborhoods healthier places. In addition to the reduction of clutter, getting rid of old tires helps to control the possible spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-based diseases.” The complete article is here: http://www.wfyi.org/news/articles/marion-county-mosquito-controls-tire-recycling-day-is-june-11
On June 1, 2016 an article titled ‘Abandoned vehicles litter roadways’ by Nancy Cook was posted on West Hawaii Today with the following information: “Abandoned vehicles dumped on the sides of Mamalahoa Hwy & elsewhere across the island are slowly disappearing, thanks to a new contract signed by Hawaii County. The news is a huge relief to Shirlee Shumway, who for six months has noticed many cars beginning to appear on the roadside. The county began tagging the abandoned vehicles, then removing them. Individuals were stripping the valuable components from the cars at night. According to Shumway, one car, covered in a silver tarp, had been on the Mamalahoa Highway, for 10 months. The car had no engine and wasn’t parked on private property–the tarp was old & held in place by lava rocks.
A decrease in scrap metal prices & the loss of markets in China over the past year contributed to a drop in county recycling efforts. But county Environmental Director Bobby Jean Todd says the new contracts with haulers are moving the cars off the roadside & onto county property. The cars collected by a contracted junk hauler are sold at auctions or they’re held at the county’s (2) car yards to be sent off for recycling. Haulers receive between $58 and $75 per car, plus $4.50 to $7.50 a mile to transport the abandoned vehicles. On public roadways, junk automobiles may be removed by calling the Hawaii PD.” The full article can be viewed at this link http://westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-news/abandoned-vehicles-litter-roadways
