A September 30, 2016 story in Recycling International by Kirstin Linnenkoper tells us the following: “Over six billion batteries were sold in the US in 2014, with a combined weight of 242M kilograms, says a report by North American battery collection outfit Call2Recycle, which recycled a record 3.3M kilograms of one-use and rechargeable batteries in the 1st half of this year. Market indicators proved that, in 2014, alkaline-style batteries were over 60% of battery weight sold, while SSLA/Pb and Li-Ion are estimated to be approximately about 15%. Smith says that over 80% of rechargeable batteries marketed in 2014 were actually Li-Ion, while fewer than 40% were marketed by weight.

Primary batteries were said to have a much shorter lifespan than the rechargeable battery style, with about 80% of alkaline batteries disposed of by their seventh year. Li-Ion and Ni-Cd batteries didn’t reach the 80% disposal rate until after 11 or 15 years respectively. Alkaline batteries will last (15+) years. Also, the rate of which batteries are used in all consumer products is definitely increasing. As a result of this trend, the statistics will be different from what has been designed.

Over the next few years, the battery classification is going to change quite a bit in sales and mix. The amount of single-use batteries sold in the US is likely to decline, while rechargeable batteries are believed to surge. In 2014, the approximate split of battery sales by weight was 2/3 primary to 1/3 rechargeable. Some of the major trends include that as single-use batteries have a short lifecycle and are likely to be simply removed from a products, using sales volume in the market in calculation of the collection rate and recycling plan performance is fairly accurate. Rechargeable-style batteries have a lengthed lifecycle and, for some attractions and product applications, more probable to be embedded in many products.” The full article is available here.

A recent story on Used Car News titled ‘Women Warming Up to Used Cars’ with the following information: “Jumpstart Auto Group released an auto shopper study in collaboration with Ipsos Connect. This report identifies new trends in the auto-shopping process for various demographics, including women, millennials, as well as Asian and Hispanic shoppers. The research indicates that millennials are not only interested in purchasing cars, but they are also cycling in-market more frequently due to changes in life stages (four in 10 shoppers buy a new car every three years vs. nearly six out of 10 millennials). Online auto buying decisions has shortened their decision-making time to a 30-day process. 3/4 of millennials now take (4) weeks or less when shopping for a car and 88% research online throughout the full process.

Women are an important audience for both dealers and manufacturing, considering they influence 80% of all transactions. They rely heavily on separate research and reviews and are more likely to view Consumer Reports than any other group. Women place a greater value on practical needs such as passenger seating, comfort, and safety, while remaining thrifty. Although they are mostly new-car buyers, they show more willingness to consider used if it means they’re going to get more for their money compared to men. Asian & Hispanic shoppers place a greater value on brands of cars that are more popular or recognizable, as well as those with alternative fueling options. Overall purchase pricing is important to Asian shoppers, but they are more willing to increase their monthly payment if they feel the value is there. Hispanic auto buyers seem to value the purchase price over than monthly payment, but the payment is a stronger consideration for them than any other group.

Asian consumers tend to subscribe to a ‘you get what you pay for’ mentality that places a high emphasis on quality. Hispanic shoppers tend to purchase more new vehicles than used, and they often hold onto a vehicle and pass it down to a family member instead of trading it in, making trade-in deals less attractive to this group.” The full article is available here.

In the January 28, 2016 edition of waste350.com Robert Carr authored an article titled ‘Contamination Continues to Hurt Recycling Efforts’ which informed us as follows: “US cities are examining methods to cut back, or even eliminate, recycling programs to save money. Experts say costs could be trimmed if residents were more responsible. Recycling costs are rising across the US. Also, there is less demand for recycled materials internationally & low oil prices lowered costs of making new material. One problem is too much garbage in with the recycling clogs sorting facilities & requires more labor to remove.

David Biderman, CEO @ Solid Waste Association of NA, says governments are evaluating recycling & making cuts to respond to the cost. Residents clog up the recycled waste stream with non-recyclables. Most Americans support recycling efforts, but what can or can’t be recycled puts the wrong materials in the stream. Processing facilities have a high amount of non-recycling waste, and it costs time to remove the materials and the rates get passed on to the cities. Curt Bucey, VP @ Strategic Materials, says municipalities have raised rates for the high costs to haul glass and it’s not being collected properly. Haulers were able to balance the glass costs with returns from materials such as cardboard, paper & plastics. China, a former big customer for cardboard, pulled back & lower oil prices dropped prices for plastics. A solution between haulers & cities are needed to challenges when creating waste removal bids. Haulers need to be upfront about increases if glass is not kept separate. Better educational materials could be used to encourage residents to separate their waste. Chicago tries to communicate bad recycling choices by a sticker system; if a waste hauler sees non-recyclable material in a resident’s bin, the hauler will place an orange warning sticker on it.” To read the article in its entirety, visit this link.

In another related Associated Press article, we were told the following: “A review of city records shows Austin received under $3 million for its recyclables, as processing costs were around $4.8 million. The city lost $1.9M last year and a $2.7M in the two previous years as recyclable materials have fetched less on the open market than the cost to process them. The Austin American-Statesman reports that if residents recycled more, it would be easier to profitably sell a higher volume of material locally, rather than ship it elsewhere.” The complete article is at this link.

I took it a step further to understand the junk and scrap related financial disaster in Austin. According to the city website austintexas.gov the monthly costs for residents are as follows, based on the size of garbage container needed[1]:

  • 24-gallon $16.90
  • 32-gallon $18.15
  • 64-gallon $23.30
  • 96-gallon $41.85

Personally, I’ve filled my approximately (50) gallon container in a week, therefore, a family of four would likely need the 96G unit for the $42 monthly cost, which seems reasonable. In addition, the add on other fees including: Extra bags of trash that do not fit in your trash cart with the lid closed must be placed next to the trash cart & tagged with an Extra Trash Sticker, which can be purchased at for $4 + tax. Extra bags without a sticker will be charged a per-bag fee of $9.60 + tax. Next, all residents in Austin, including homes, apartments, condos, pay a monthly $7.65 Clean Community Fee for services that keep Austin clean. To full webpage is at this link.
