A recent Ventura County Star article explains as follows: “Vehicle batteries are nearly always recycled, but high rates of recycling are not lone environmental success. Even the best managed recycling needs energy, devours resources and makes some pollution. It is best to attempt to preserve the current ones for a long time. An article titled “Start Me Up,” by Peter Bohr in the last edition of the Auto Club’s “Westways” publication explains some causes for excessive drainage on vehicle batteries. The most clearly evident cause is devices, ranging from the car’s interior lights to mobile phone chargers, which consume power from the vehicle’s battery while the car is not moving. To limit the problem, maintain plug-in power sources provide power when the vehicle ignition is off.  Shorter trips can reduce the power of the unit also, which does not fully allow the alternator to renew the battery; contact with extreme high or low temperatures; and long periods of dormancy. Dashboard camera and radar detection devices can consume power, and some aftermarket auto starting systems also contribute to reduction. Many batteries fail due to presence of a faulty relay, according to testautos.com.

On their website, Nationwide suggests that drivers maintain their vehicle batteries to limit corrosion and better affect their lifespan. Clean the terminals using a toothbrush coated with baking soda & water to clean off the remnants with a liquid bottle and dry with a cloth. The site also recommended tightening batteries by fastening to avoid short circuit breaks caused by impact.  Batteries are ordinarily recharged by the alternator, which runs exclusively when the engine is operating. Vehicles which are stored for extended periods without running, such as usually RVs & motorbikes — can derive a benefit from usage of a device designed for maintenance, which uses a 12 volt outlet and maintains the stability of energy after lengthy periods of usage”.  The article in full form is available at this link.

As we move onward with the latest news and information from the world of scrap autos, we illustrate the (6) steps in scrapping a car.

  1. Acceptance of the reality that your vehicle has reached the ended of its useful life. The reasons tend to be that the costs of fixing the car exceed the value of the vehicle if it were in running condition; or, that too much time has passed since the car was parked with the intention of repairing it and you need it removed.
  2. Locate the vehicle title and ID, since these items are necessary in Ohio to transfer ownership. Also at this time you confirm the year, make and model of the car to be salvaged.
  3. Determining who will buy and scrap the car for you. Typically you will contact several junk car hauling outfits for pricing and details. We recommend a Google search to identify the options.
  4. Schedule and coordinate a time for the exchange to take place (cash for the car). The listed owner on the title will need to be present, and usually allowing for a couple hour “window” of time is recommended i.e. 10AM-12PM.
  5. Remove any personal items that you need to from the scrap vehicle.
  6. When the scrap vehicle removal driver arrives he should give you a receipt or bill of sale to document the completion of the transaction.

This next segment is the first of a series explaining how auto fluids that we capture from scrap cars and the challenges they present as we strive to recycle them. CSC is proud to be a “green” organization that is focused on protecting the environment here in Ohio.

Antifreeze is the first potentially toxic fluid from salvage cars that we will cover. The US EPA tells us the following in their Common Wastes & Materials section of epa.gov: “Antifreeze is a substance added to a solvent, such as water, to lower its freezing point. It is usually added to water in the cooling system of an engine so that it can be cooled below the freezing point of water without freezing. Ethylene glycol is the most common automotive cooling-system antifreeze, although methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and propylene glycol are also used. The brine used in some commercial refrigerators is an antifreeze-type mixture; it is typically a solution of calcium chloride or propylene glycol. Antifreeze can be toxic to humans & animals; it contains heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium in high levels to potentially be regulated hazardous waste. Most states regulate antifreeze disposal; it should not be dumped on land or discharged it into a sanitary sewer, storm drain, ditch, dry well, or septic system. Used antifreeze can cause serious water quality problems.

Conventional antifreeze lasts about 2-3 years. Alternate chemicals in extended-life coolants allow it to last 5 years or up to 150K miles. Recycling used antifreeze makes sense for two reasons: 1) It is cost-effective, and 2) It saves resources. Ethylene glycol, the primary ingredient, is produced from natural gas, which is a finite, non-renewable resource. For companies that use a lot of antifreeze, like automobile repair shops, setting up an antifreeze recycling program can reduce costs and lessen the amount of new material they buy. With technology, businesses are recycling antifreeze on-site and reconditioning it at a much lower cost than purchasing it new.

Antifreeze recycling involves two steps:

1. Removing contaminants such as oils & metals either by filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, or ion exchange.

2. Restoring it’s properties with additives; these chemicals raise and stabilize pH, inhibit rust & corrosion, reduce water scaling, and slow the breakdown of ethylene glycol.

New technology lets generators of spent antifreeze recycle antifreeze on site by removing contaminants and reconditioning it with additives, at a cost that is significantly lower than the cost of purchasing new antifreeze. Another option for recycling antifreeze includes power flushing the radiator, restoring the coolant, and topping off the vehicle with fresh coolant in a closed loop. Recycling saves resources since a primary ingredient, ethylene glycol, is produced from natural gas, a non-renewable resource. The full report is available at this link.
