The result is that rock aggregate (RA) has become costly and problematic to obtain in many sites. TDA has many benefits that make it an excellent option to rock aggregate for drainage projects. TDA has higher permeability than drain rock aggregate and is much lower weight. Rather than potentially stirring up environmental problems by mining or producing rock aggregate, usage of TDA reuses a scrap product and keeps junk vehicle tires out of landfills. TDA may perform better than rock aggregate and in most instances does so at a reduced cost. TDA has been used successfully as a substitute for RA in drain fields for over 20 years in numerous states including AR, CA, CO, GA, IA, KS, NM, NY, NC, SC, TX, VT, and Virginia.

The push for the use of TDA has been largely financail. Depending on the operation and transportation expenses, construction savings for drain fields can fluctuate 10 to 90% when TDA is used in place of RA. Because the density of TDA is about 1/3 of that of gravel, only 1/3 of the tonnage of TDA is needed for the same size drain field. Many reports have indicated the extensive biological activity found in TDA media leach fields. Generally, these studies have shown that TDA fosters a healthy population of bacteria & other organisms that offer active biofilm treatment of the organic portion of the leachate in systems. The design of a leach field structure is quite similar to a project using traditional rock or gravel. The primary difference would be shifting the design to account for the variance in the engineering properties of TDA.

After excavation to create trenches for the leach field, the TDA would be utilized as a substitute for RA backfill. Since the TDA treats wastewater, the material should be clear of any contamination that could merge into the surrounding soil or groundwater. A separation block is used in leach site construction between the RA and the soil. The barrier is often made of treated paper for conventional RA systems; however, because the protruding wires in TDA could tear the paper, geotextile fabric is a solid alternative.” The full report is available here.

The OCC said auto-lending risk is heightening “because of notable & unprecedented growth across all types of lenders. As banks have fought for market share, some banks have gone with less stringent underwriting standards, the report said. The report indicated the role of indirect auto lending, in which banks offer cash to auto dealerships, who in turn lend to consumers. The report said indirect lending reflects “an area of significant fair lending risk” amid fast growth. Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Thomas Curry had raised the red flag once before about auto lending, making an analogy between it and the mortgage crisis.

Automotive lending has spiked in recent years with historically lower interest rates, inexpensive gas and stronger consumer demand. Auto loans even performed pretty well during the financial crisis, which market observers have viewed as a sign that the loans are safe because even low income households must pay for transportation. This is actually our second installment discussing the recycling of scrap related automotive fluids. Initially, we reviewed antifreeze and in this segment we unearth information on old motor oil. First, we look at data from the American Petroleum Institute at recycleoil.org as follows: “It is relatively common for people to recycle paper, glass and metals. The recycling of petroleum products is less well known confusing, thus regulators & agencies have communicated with businesses the need for recycling used oil and with individuals who work on their cars at home. These individuals generate quantities of used petroleum products that need to be recycled. Many individuals who are unfamiliar with the importance of recycling used oil are unconsciously harming the environment by throwing it away with their normal garbage or emptying it into storm drains. Such actions, especially emptying used oil into storm drains, can cause harm to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate 1 million gallons of water.

Recycling your used motor oil keeps it out of our water; which means keeping it out of our drinking water, beaches, and away from wildlife. Recycling used oil allows us to continue to enjoy what many of us take for granted every day – clean water. There are many practical uses for used motor oil; a primary use is to re-refine it into a base stock for lubricating oil, which is similar to the refining of crude oil. The re-refined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product! A secondary use of the oil is to burn it for energy. Industrial boilers can burn the used oil with minimum pollution; some used oil is sent to power plants or cement kilns to be burned as fuel. Small quantities of used oil are burned in specially designed heaters to provide space heating for small businesses.

What is the best way to store used motor oil before recycling? Be sure to store your used motor oil in a container that will not leak – many people use milk jugs with a secure cap. Do not mix other substances like antifreeze or transmission fluid with the used oil. Store it away from children and sources of ignition.” The complete report is available at this link.

Here in Columbus, the city has instituted a ‘Watershed Management Program (WMP)’ discussed on their website at Columbus.gov with the following details: “A high quality water supply source allows us to provide Columbus area residents with excellent drinking water at a reasonable cost. Our WMP works with the Recreation & Parks Department to protect water supplies by managing the reservoirs and adjacent land at our (3) drinking water reservoirs. SWACO contracts Environmental Enterprises Incorporated (EEI) to offer free residential recycling for HHW. Hours at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Center have been expanded. An extra day has also been added for the convenience of residents of Franklin County. Residents can bring their old lawn chemicals, paints strippers, acids, insecticides, etc. for recycling and/or environmentally safe disposal. Disposal of oil based paint is available at no charge.
