Indiana University has a School of Public & Environmental Affairs that recently published an interesting automobile study with the following excerpt: “It is estimated that the U.S. auto dealer market employs over 700,000 people in sales to vehicle buyers. In Europe, the automakers sell a sizable percentage of vehicles to companies and fleet buyers. In the U.S., manufacturers sell to dealers who then work with individual consumers who purchase cars for their household and are heavily dependent on credit. Auto dealers’ face some new challenges in the internet age, as customers can truly compare and have access to plenty of data on vehicles. Tesla has pioneered a direct-to-consumer model which is unique. It will be interesting to see how this model progresses.

For electric vehicles, initially manufacturers only sold them in certain cities. A UC Davis report indicated that many dealers struggled with selling electric vehicles because they did not truly understand the technology. Many dealers apparently did not properly allocate the time and training for selling these cars. With most major manufacturers now invested in these vehicles, it is likely that the relationships, marketing and financial incentives will begin to accelerate. In addition, it is critical to understand any applicable federal, state and local agency incentives or subsidies that exist.” The complete article is available here.
