Maura Keller in American Recycler wrote an article titled ‘Auto Recycling Market Volatile’ with the following updates: “The auto recycling industry has experienced one of the most difficult economic times in decades. Recycling companies are worried. Investors are cautious and scrap handlers are downright jittery. Industry vets say 2017 will likely be better, but business is still not appearing to be robust. According to Sean Kelly, a researcher at the Center for Recovery & Recycling at Worcester Polytechnic in Massachusetts, the industry is certainly hurting and this has a lot to do with the foreign tariff war regarding specific commodities, among other things, such as dumping (selling below their costs).

The U.S. Dept. of Commerce (DOC) recently imposed duties on imports of cold-rolled steel, used to make auto components, appliances & shipping containers. China is targeted because of their dumping that has hurt the U.S. steel industry & lowered steel prices around the worldwide. The tariffs against China have hindered the U.S. auto recycling industry tremendously. China had been overproducing & flooding the market & steel prices were far down. Scrap vehicle bodies were worth $60 to $70/GT, making it near impossible to earn any money.

China has begun imposing anti-dumping tariffs on various steel imports from the EU, Japan & South Korea, all of which has a domino effect on the American recycling industry. As the struggle goes on, more companies are working hard to ensure all metal bearing products end up being refined & recycled back into the economy.  The Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group (ATG) just released a study on auto aluminum suggesting recycling rate for end-of-life vehicles to be in excess of 90%. The purpose was to obtain a more quantitative grasp of the fate of auto aluminum at the end of its useful life.

GLR has now 11 locations & joint ventures in MI & NY, employing approximately one-hundred and fifty people, recycling over 100M pounds of metal, paper & plastic. What GLR has done is new in the market. They’ve begun their own tech/lead generation program, www.TheScrapPost.com, which links recyclers & scrappers worldwide. This comes at a time that the market’s downfall is struggling for auto recyclers. GLR’s competitors use this website & revenues are likely to hit $5M. One key aspect of auto recycling that is gaining more focus with the overall downturn in the market is plastic recycling from autos. The generated plastics from shredders are transferred to the landfill or used as landfill coverage. Some plastics may be incinerated to reclaim the energy. Tires are often reused if adequate tread exists but typically either incinerated, shredded or reused for very different applications, like rubber for courts, turf field pellets or asphalt applications.”

An article this week on Tech Crunch from Sarah Buhr tells us the following: “Maven, a car share company from General Motors, is cruising its way into San Francisco today. The proclamation made recently is one part of a further roll-out in several cities throughout the U.S., which began at the beginning of this year. A city-based car share service known as Maven City is currently available in (9) cities in the nation, along with Lyft’s new rental program Lyft Express Drive, which recently rolled out. GM has been associated with Lyft and added a $500M in funding. The major car maker supposedly was in discussions to purchase the rideshare company. Maven claims to have over 10,000 members & Lyft drivers have used Express Drive thus far, traveling millions of miles between them.

There are many ways to travel in SF, which include Bay – Lyft, Uber, MUNI and taxi service. Maven will also be in competition with older, established car-sharing outfits. Getaround has been in operation since 2009 and Zipcar — which was purchased by Avis — started in the year 2000. Maven rolled out a 1-way rental service for drivers to pick up a car in one spot and drive it to another without having to return it. But Zipcar has also been doing the same for a while. One of the mini vehicles they use is pictured here.

Maven thinks it will stand out in S.F among the tech crowd, using newer cars with technology that is fully connected car sharing bringing members to where they want to go. Maven uses a phone app to unlock& enter the vehicle. Maven is using GM cars and can thus offer sophisticated integrations with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar and more. Maven costs about $8/hr to rent any of its vehicles.” The full story is available here.

Megan Quinn with sportsturf.com recently posted and article that told us the following: “In North America, about 98% of artificial turf fields use shredded recycled tire rubber, or crumb rubber. The granules occupy the space amid the synthetic grass to provide cushioning, assist in drainage, and help limit injuries. Some people have concerns about whether crumb rubber is safe. There are more than 70 studies reviews from health departments, higher education, and others worldwide. None of the results indicate this is a health or environmental problem. Some environmental factions worry about chemicals in tire rubber causing cancer or other health issues thus are asking schools, cities, and such to ban crumb rubber usage. Many organizations have looked into crumb rubber’s possible health and environmental concerns. Some research has considered if crumb rubber releases chemicals into the air. The studies have found evidence to not be present.

A 2013 study by Rutgers RW Johnson Medical School in NJ checked for exposure to trace metals, semi-volatile organic compounds, and hydrocarbons from crumb rubber and the turf fibers. Researchers measured this against factors in virtual body fluids representing digestive fluids, lung fluids, and perspiration. They found that PAHs were routinely below detection limits, and SVOCs were too low to quantify. Some metals were detected, but researchers said the concentrations were low and likely wouldn’t cause health issues.

In 2013, ChemRisk led a review for the Rubber Manufacturers Association to gauge the health & eco-concerns associated with the use of recycled scrap rubber on playgrounds & sports fields. While some of the ingredients used in tire manufacturing are considered to be possibly hazardous to human health, the potential for an athlete or childs exposure is very low. After reviewing studies from both supporters and opponents of crumb rubber, ChemRisk concludes that no adverse human health are likely to result from reusing tire material.

Al Garver, president of the Synthetic Turf Council, says STC encourages the calls for more technical studies and testing. Auto recyclers & rubber manufacturers thin science is on their side. Over 70 independent studies conducted over the have offered clear evidence. Recently in Edmonds, WA, they put an 18-month hold on installation of new fields made with the rubber infill from scrap tires. Residents protested the local school district’s plans to take out the old grass field at a school and put in synthetic turf. Patrick Doherty, of the city’s economic development & community services, says new field construction was underway when people learned the new field would have this rubber infill, so laborers completed the project prior to the protests to stop the installation. Due to community concern, other such projects were halted. Communities and organizers have a right to weight their options whether to use crumb rubber or something else on their fields. People should read the studies to make the decisions instead of listening to public perception.” The full article is available here.

Jackson Twp. is supporting Liberty Tire Service in the manufacturing & processing of scrap auto tires. This award for $350K is to purchase a scrap vehicle tire processing unit. The 2nd allows the use of scrap-tire material in the constructing geo cells for stabilizing soil engineering designs; the program assists businesses that propose projects to have successful junk car tire markets and innovating scrap products. Our topic in this update centers on how US scrap auto batteries end up in Mexican recycling plants and unfortunately can be dangerous to those workers exposed to them.

In the February 26, 2016 edition of The Washington Post, writers Joshua Partlow and Joby Warrick authored a story titled ‘A dangerous export’ which tells us the following: “Juan Gonzalez Mendoza’s physical deterioration came swiftly, with deep pain in his bones, elbows & knees that refused to bend. Numbness spread throughout his left side and finally he was unable to walk or even stand. Doctors where he worked — a battery recycling plant near Monterrey — told him he had a fever. His job was putting used U.S. auto batteries into giant ovens. Private medical tests eventually confirmed the problem: acute lead poisoning. The Eléctrica Automotriz Omega plant is a concern in the neighborhoods near the factory where spent car batteries are converted into lead to for new batteries. Elevated levels of lead have turned up in workers’ blood and in nearby lots where children play & families raise livestock. Company officials did not respond to requests for comment.

A tide of used batteries has swept into northern Mexico as metal recyclers seek to profit from the country’s relatively lax controls on lead exposure in the workplace. Officials estimate that the number of batteries shipped to Mexico has grown by more than 400% lately. As many as one in five lead-acid batteries from U.S. vehicles end up in Mexican recycling plants. Mexico has sought to strengthen standards for lead exposure, but no plants have the costly pollution controls and worker-protection systems in place. Gonzalez used his vacation days from the plant to travel to a private medical clinic where lab results indicated lead concentrations. For nine months he was stuck in bed and unable to work. Auto batteries are among consumer products that still contain large amounts of lead. In the US nearly all spent batteries end up being recycled, which involves removing the plastic, acid and other chemicals and then melting down the lead to use in new batteries. U.S. battery recycling takes place in high-capacity smelters. Workers wear protective clothing to ensure no traces of lead leave the plant with them. Special exhaust scrubbers trap tiny lead particles and electronic monitors sniff the air to guard against accidental exposures.

Americans, while seeking to eliminate an environmental problem at home, are exporting contamination abroad, to a region less capable of defending itself. The Eléctrica Automotriz Omega plant employs several dozen workers who say they earn about $13 for a 12-hour shift. Soil samples taken at locations around the Omega plant were analyzed by a laboratory. The results showed lead contamination ranging from 40 to 400 times than naturally occurring lead levels. The company does test for lead, but workers aren’t given documentation of the test results and think that Omega’s doctors play down lead exposure. Employees are instructed to shower during the workday, and before entering the cafeteria, they receive a hand spray that is supposed to change color if contaminants remain. Both employees and nearby residents complain about the lead and toxins they believe are pumped out of the plant’s smokestacks. Residents say they suffer chronic headaches and bone pain and that pets and livestock fail to reproduce or drop dead without warning.” The full article is available at http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/national/2016/02/26/a-dangerous-export-americas-car-battery-waste-is-making-mexican-communities-sick/
