Impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) On Auto Recycling: Part 1 of 3

junk car buyer

In 2021, electric vehicles (EVs) constituted roughly 9% of all the vehicles sold in the world.  Here in the U.S., motorists own approximately 2.5 million EVs; however, researchers suggest that the number of EVs on the road should exceed 40 million by 2030.

This is the first of a brief three-part series that will look at the impact that EVs will ultimately have on the auto scrap and recycling market.

EVs use considerably fewer components and should result in declining demand for workers in the real of manufacturing by at least 25%. The EV life cycle or supply chain is as follows:

Sourcing: A host of raw materials are extracted such as cobalt, lithium, manganese, and nickel.

Initial production: The materials require purification and other processing, which larges involves achieving compatibility for the batteries used in these cars.

Assembly and distribution: The batteries are created, packaged, and shipped to vehicle manufacturers for installation.

Aftermarket: Those components that have reached end-of-life status will (ideally) be reuse, repurposed, or recycled.

It is alleged that Ballinger took the title to a car owned by his father to obtain a title loan (advance) by pretending to be the owner. (We assume he and his father must have the same name to put this off?) He has been charged with identity theft and forgery charges. His father apparently awoke one morning to see his car be towed away by a repo-man. Wouldn’t Ballinger have to know his father’s social security number to complete the loan process? His father had no idea that the loan had been taken out against his car. The full story is available at this link. Meanwhile, in the Youngstown area Federal authorities are pursuing members of a local gang that are believed to be heavily involved in crime. One of the individuals is name Andre Ballinger II. A UCLA study known as Overcoming Barriers to Electric Vehicle Charging in Multiple-Unit Dwellings told us the following: “MUD ownership has an effect on a resident’s incentive to invest in home charging. MUDs include both apartment-style structures and condominiums. Apartment buildings are usually owned by an individual or organization that rents out the units to tenants. The owner is accountable for all shared (common) areas like lighting for the lobby. Any major structural changes to the site will be paid for by ownership who makes decisions to invest based on heightening the value of the units & charging higher rent. Condos are owned by the individual resident with exterior decisions, such managing common areas, likely made by the home owner association (HOA) oversight board. Those renting, are less motivated because they are not likely to invest money in an immoveable type of equipment that they may move from in the future. Apartment owners & management teams may (or may not) not view EVSE as an amenity that attracts tenants.

Condo owners are more likely to view the EVSE as a site improvement positively impacting the potential value of their unit, although a significant installation might require support by the HOA governing board.  MUD ownership will also control who is responsible for shared area management including oversight of the 110/120-volt outlets that may be accessed in the parking area. In an apartment settings, outlets, which can provide Level 1 charging if they have ample electrical capacity, which is likely if connected to the primary house panel. The house panel controls the supply of electricity for all common appliances & shared areas such like laundry and pool equipment. Renters would need approval from ownership to use electricity when the exterior electrical outlets are connected to the house panel The MUD stock in the region consists of 78 percent apartments. The Beach & Peninsula Cities are more likely condos. Redondo Beach’s large duplex & triplex supply (7,081) is 64% condominium.  The full article is available here.

The Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling and Metal Processing Institute’s recycling report details are: “The landfill materials are what is left at the completion of shredding and sorting at a scrap processing site. The study team asked the processors to look and share their information regarding the aluminum alloy material in this combined product at the end of their finalization of the process. All those processors surveyed then employ some downstream separation beyond just the magnetic and air-separation. All the remaining product is either passed through certain processes for further classification or put through the same one another to be sure the maximum yield.

Downstream separation systems (DSSs) are processes that use dry and/or wet automatic separating technologies to heighten scrap in value and by-product classification. In many cases, shredding operators partake in some form of further downstream separation. Some operators conduct their process without hammer mill shredding. These companies buy already shredded scrap in bulk and then sort and separate. Auto shredded scrap can be sorted based on:

  • Size
  • Color
  • Weight
  • Magnetic properties
  • Electrical conductivity
  • Density and chemical composition

The non-ferrous residue (NFR) can enter these places as a mixed non-ferrous, non-metallic scrap stream that has been shredded, magnetic and, in some cases, air separation. NFR can be composed of plastics, rubbers, wood, stones, and dozens of other material. The volume of the contaminants (i.e. dirt, foam, plastic, rubber etc.) varies upon the extent of air separation conducted before the magnetic. Some processors seek the wire & circuit board content before shipping non-ferrous residue. The common non-ferrous metals are:

  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Brass
  • Zinc

Some DSSs incorporate technology to reach NFR’s constituents, collect and sell them to further downstream consumers.” For additional information visit: http://wp.wpi.edu/mpi/category/cr3news/

With our auto recycling program, fewer raw materials are used, which conserves energy and natural resources.

Megan Quinn posted a story on ISRI recently that shed some light on junk auto converters as follows: “Instead of selling recycled catalytic converters (CC’s) in bulk, recyclers are beginning get their units to refiners to get a better price. The variation in products, up-and-down prices, and some dishonest members of the industry make it difficult to truly master this unique recycling niche. Recyclers who collect CC’s know the platinum-group metals have significant value once a cat specialist or refiner buys the unit, but it takes often closely held knowledge to uncover whether a single unit is worth $400 or a meager $5. Recyclers, muffler shops, and car dismantlers have been collecting and selling CC’s since they became common in the mid-1970s to reduce vehicle emissions. Traditionally these outfits will gather a container full of CC’s and sell them to a cat specialist, who pays the collector based on the estimated value of the load prior to cutting each unit open to uncover the valuable PGMs inside. Recyclers are trying to skip the cat specialist middleman and work directly with the refiner, who will pay them for the exact value of their CC’s.

Cutting out the middleman doesn’t always generate profits. More-knowledgeable folks still easily take advantage of less-knowledgeable players in the platinum-group metals market. Sellers must learn as much about CC’s composition as they can and work with trustworthy partners. Recycling the PGMs inside CC’s hasn’t changed much. In the first stage of the recycling chain are the suppliers: peddlers, muffler garages, auto dismantlers, scrapyards, and vehicle manufacturers with production scrap. They can either sell the CC’s to cat specialists who open the units to retrieve and sell the PGM itself, or some other arrangement.

When collectors sell their CC’s outright to a cat specialist, the buyer typically uses an X-ray fluorescence analyzing device to estimate the approximate levels of PGMs in order to determine what they pay the collector. A refiner separates the platinum, palladium, and rhodium into their raw forms. Although collectors who work directly with refiners believe they are receiving fair and accurate pricing, it is hard to know for sure. Jay Robie, CEO of Phoenix Group Metals & Phoenix Automotive Cores says there isn’t a secret method to gathering the correct information to succeed, but there are companies with solid reputations that are willing to play by the rules.

Of the three main metals in CC’s, platinum is usually the most valuable, with palladium nest. Newer CC’s often have higher amounts of it than platinum because of its lower material cost. Rhodium, a rare metal used as a hardening catalyst for platinum and palladium, is typically present also. The industry is hoping for better prices in the future, low prices from the past year still affect the way people buy, sell, and process CC’s today.”

In the April 6, 2016 edition of the Swift County Monitor-News, Reed Anfinson authored a story titled ‘Council aims to focus on cleaning up Benson’ with the following information: “You see a car parked in a front yard with tarp over it and a block later three cars are parked in a front yard. Down a couple more blocks is a house that has been badly in need of a paint job for years. Drive around some more in the community and you see a surprising number of residential neighborhoods with cars parked in yards. We don’t remember it being quite as prevalent as it is today. Maybe people used to take more pride in what their yards looked like in the past. Maybe they knew their neighbors better and were more respectful of not being the one responsible for making a neat and well-cared-for block look junky. But cars aren’t the only problem. People are pulling large campers into residential yards and leaving them. You will see pickup campers, some with old tarps over them, some not, dropped in a yard. Some yards have dilapidated sheds with holes in them and broken doors providing great habitat for feral cats and rodents. Others yards are strewn with a wide assortment of junk.

The problem of broken down, dilapidated buildings isn’t a one isolated to residential areas. There are a few in the downtown area as well. Buildings needing paint, a building with the metal roof caving in, and others just simply in need of some attention to take them from looking run down to passable are a few of the problems that need correcting. According to Doug Griffiths and Kelly Clemmer, if you want to ensure that your community fails, then you have to make sure you don’t paint. Of course, painting isn’t the only factor included in this concept – it encompasses anything that may beautify your community such as sweeping, cleaning, planting flowers, mowing grass, picking up garbage. We are struggling as a region to attract people to come and live here. But while we will go to extraordinary lengths to get a new business land, buildings and financing to help them get started or expand, we need to do a much better job of making this a community that looks like a really nice place to live. Communities are often judged by first impressions. As people drive around your town, they make judgments not just about what it has to offer, but also about how it looks. It doesn’t take many rundown homes, yards full of junk, or cars parked in yards for the people driving around to say, I wouldn’t want to live next door to that!

At that point, you have likely blown your opportunity to maybe bring a young family of four to town. The employer who was hoping to fill a vacancy with a well-qualified person has lost him or her to another community. They won’t be buying a home; they won’t be going to the local grocery story; they won’t be buying goods at the local hardware store; they won’t be visiting the local medical clinic; or helping the local school district out with the $7K in state funding each of their children represents –funding that helps maintain classroom teachers. Benson’s City Council is talking about getting serious in its enforcement of nuisance laws to see the community cleaned up. In the coming weeks it’s likely that those who have let their yards become an eyesore are going to be getting ticketed.

If our current ordinances don’t address the problem of cars parked in yards, then we hope they pass one. This law can also address campers. Not everyone is going to be happy with the council’s efforts. Some are going to be angry about it; some think that local government has no business telling them to clean up their yard or where to park their vehicles. But Benson’s council does have an interest in ensuring property owners meet a minimum standard for cleanliness & appearance. Health issues, protecting the value of properties in a neighborhood, as well as helping spur economic development are all good reasons to enforce these standards. We certainly support and appreciate the direction the council is taking on making the community a more attractive place to live.”
