Columbus WBNS-10TV explains the following in a recent story:   People who allow abandoned junk vehicle to sit around on their properties will soon receive a notice via mail.  The Franklin Township Trustees are in the process of removing ‘eyesores’ in the regions that threaten property values. The township says those that do not take action to move these cars will face towing removal and fines.  Warning notices will begin being mailed soon.  The township figures there are approximately 60 junk vehicles. Junk cars in the state are defined as follows under the revised code: “Abandoned junk motor vehicle” is a motor vehicle that has been abandoned on private property for 48 hours or longer without the permission of the person having the right to possession of the property, on a public or other property open to the public for purposes of vehicular travel or parking, or upon or without the right-of-way of any road or highway, 48 hours or longer; that is three years or older; that is expansively damaged, such damage including to missing tires, engines or transmission; that is appears inoperable; and that has a FMV of $1,500 or less.” Chief of Police Byron Smith is sending officers to visit property owners or occupiers to let them know of the scrap car policy. He says cars with existing tags will not be towed and only vehicles that are visibile from the street qualify. The city has contracted with a tow company who will remove the vehicles and dump them for scrap.

The CA Department of Resources Recycling & Recovery report on TDA informaed us of the following: “Tire-derived aggregate, or TDA, is a recyclable material derived from scrap auto tires. TDA was originally called shreds but with the advancement of standards and specifications that distinguished it from waste tires and other such derivatives, the name TDA was adopted to classify it as a standardized material. TDA has inherently good properties as a business material replacement for traditional aggregates like gravel and pumice-style rock, due to having less weight, high permeability, and a less costly material.

The Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) has outlined the practices for usage of scrap auto tires in civil engineering applications and describes the material as pieces of scrap tires that have a simple geometrical shape and are usually between 3-12” in size. TDA is made by treating tires with a shredder machine that uses rotating cutting shears and a conveyor and screening system. Shears (which have been sharpened) are needed to produce clean cuts without residual amounts of exposed wire. The 1st pass through the machine produces rougher shreds. Additional passes through the shredder and a screen system break the material down to smaller pieces. The overall principle holds that the smaller the material to be produced, then the more shredding is necessary. While there are many TDA vendors and many various process configurations, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the TDA material delivered meets the desired specs.

Coordinating with vendors to have steady supplies and compliance with the specs is a critical part of the project development process. Vendors usually produce a variety of shredded tire products to match demand and don’t typically maintain back-stock of material. On April 13, 2016 an article in Plastics Technology titled ‘GM Recycles Water Bottles to Produce Chevy Equinox Part’ was posted with the following info: “The Detroit auto giant is recycling employees’ water bottles into noise-reducing fabric insulation that covers the Chevy Equinox engine. GM says that while all its sites recycle their water bottles, for this project, the bottles collected at five sites are now funneled into its DYP project, where businesses collaborate to give them a 2nd use in life. The air-filtration components are used in GM facilities to protect the quality of the air; and the insulation goes into coats that transform into sleeping bags.

John Bradburn, GM global manager of waste reduction say viewing waste as a valuable resource that can be plugged into your operations or products is great. He is rethinking the process and finding more sustainable ways to manufacture products & contribute to communities. GM says that sourcing recycled material provides the same costs while also saving energy & reducing waste.

Each partner engaged in this project brings specific capabilities. Hamtramck Recycling bails the plastic bottles. Clean Tech Inc. washes them and converts them to flake. Unifi Inc. turns the bottle flake into a resin. Palmetto Synthetics takes the resin to create fibers and William T. Burnett & Co. processes the fibers into various types of fleece, serving all several applications.

  • Rogers Foam Corp. cuts the fleece and attaches it into the nylon pad for the Chevrolet Equinox engine. The component helps deaden engine noise to deliver a quiet ride.
  • Filtration Services Group works with New Life Center, a nonprofit, to make the panels for air filtration, which is then sent to GM facilities.
  • The coat insulation is sent to Carhartt, a workwear company, to be cut to size.

GM uses recycled content in many of its vehicles. Cardboard from various plants is recycled into a sound-deadening material in the Buick Verano; plastic caps & shipping aids are mixed with other materials to make radiator components for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra; and tires from Milford Proving Ground are shredded and reused in the manufacturing of air and water baffles for a various GM cars.” The complete story is available at this link.
