Market indicators proved that, in 2014, alkaline-style batteries were over 60% of battery weight sold, while SSLA/Pb and Li-Ion are estimated to be approximately about 15%. Smith says that over 80% of rechargeable batteries marketed in 2014 were actually Li-Ion, while fewer than 40% were marketed by weight.
Primary batteries were said to have a much shorter lifespan than the rechargeable battery style, with about 80% of alkaline batteries disposed of by their seventh year. Li-Ion and Ni-Cd batteries didn’t reach the 80% disposal rate until after 11 or 15 years respectively. Alkaline batteries will last (15+) years. Also, the rate of which batteries are used in all consumer products is definitely increasing. As a result of this trend, the statistics will be different from what has been designed.
