Recycled junk tires from cars can be shredded up and used in asphalt for roads or in other various manufactured products—even as fuel for energy. When dumped as litter in the local areas, they pose both a fire risk and a human health risk as they become a fertile area for mosquitos to breed.
Governor Rick Snyder’s program to double the state’s residential recycling percentage to 30%. They fund types of projects that provide future uses for old tires: Road projects are now using rubberized asphalt in construction & repair projects to Michigan roadways. Rubber-modified asphalt creates a pavement that is designed be longer-lasting and provide better noise reduction and skid control and visibility in rain and snow. Scrap auto tires used in construction-related projects must come from MI sources. Research and development is underway to determine better ways to use scrap tire rubber into asphalt and concrete, improving the performance of the materials. Equipment-related developments are escalating for using scrap tires, and find new ways to create several commodities from scrap tires and increasing current product generation. Examples of current products include floor tiling, footwear and rubber-compounded feedstock for injection & blow molding.
