Indiana University has a School of Public & Environmental Affairs that recently published an interesting automobile study with the following excerpt: “It is estimated that the U.S. auto dealer market employs over 700,000 people in sales to vehicle buyers. In Europe, the automakers sell a sizable percentage of vehicles to companies and fleet buyers. In the U.S., manufacturers sell to dealers who then work with individual consumers who purchase cars for their household and are heavily dependent on credit. Auto dealers’ face some new challenges in the internet age, as customers can truly compare and have access to plenty of data on vehicles. Tesla has pioneered a direct-to-consumer model which is unique. It will be interesting to see how this model progresses.

For electric vehicles, initially manufacturers only sold them in certain cities. A UC Davis report indicated that many dealers struggled with selling electric vehicles because they did not truly understand the technology. Many dealers apparently did not properly allocate the time and training for selling these cars. With most major manufacturers now invested in these vehicles, it is likely that the relationships, marketing and financial incentives will begin to accelerate. An article this week on Tech Crunch from Sarah Buhr tells us the following: “Maven, a car share company from General Motors, is cruising its way into San Francisco today. The proclamation made recently is one part of a further roll-out in several cities throughout the U.S., which began at the beginning of this year. A city-based car share service known as Maven City is currently available in (9) cities in the nation, along with Lyft’s new rental program Lyft Express Drive, which recently rolled out. GM has been associated with Lyft and added a $500M in funding. The major car maker supposedly was in discussions to purchase the rideshare company. Maven claims to have over 10,000 members & Lyft drivers have used Express Drive thus far, traveling millions of miles between them.

There are many ways to travel in SF, which include Bay – Lyft, Uber, MUNI and taxi service. Maven will also be in competition with older, established car-sharing outfits. Getaround has been in operation since 2009 and Zipcar — which was purchased by Avis — started in the year 2000. Maven rolled out a 1-way rental service for drivers to pick up a car in one spot and drive it to another without having to return it. But Zipcar has also been doing the same for a while. Maven thinks it will stand out in S.F among the tech crowd, using newer cars with technology that is fully connected car sharing bringing members to where they want to go. Maven uses a phone app to unlock& enter the vehicle. Maven is using GM cars and can thus offer sophisticated integrations with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar and more. Josh Baugh posted an article titled ‘Trash found in recycling bin will result in a $25 fine’ in the July 6, 2016 edition of the San Antonio Express News with the following info: “Over the past few days, the 300K+ residential customers of the city’s Waste Management Department have received letters explaining that they could face fines of $25 for placing trash in the blue recycling units. Residents who put trash in these bins could see fines in their monthly CPS Energy bills. There was some outrage on social media.

About 45% of the department’s customers now have green cans for organics, and rollout for that program will be completed by mid-2017. In order to become more environmentally responsible, the city has set a goal of diverting about 60% of waste from landfills by 2025. This means increasing the amount of the items which can be recycled. Organic materials like grass and tree branches go into the green carts (you can also put cardboard boxes in there). Those organics are turned into mulch. Plastics, papers and others with the “recycle” emblem go in the blue cart. Trash that can’t go in the blue or green carts goes into the brown. Like your hypodermic needles, full bags of trash, dirty diapers etc. The people in charge of sorting recycling materials from the blue carts have found several shark heads and deer carcasses. The sorting crews are also pulling hundreds of lbs. of dirty diapers each hour from the recycling stream. About 23% of the recycling items are contaminated, and the city wants to be at less than 15%.

Waste-management workers have been trying to educate residents on which bin to use for these discarded items. Councilman Rey Saldaña says the city has taken the “carrot-and stick” approach in attempting to reduce recycling contamination — which both spoils loads of otherwise recyclable material & poses health hazards for the employees sorting the trash. The councilman says the issue isn’t relegated to a certain side of town — it seems to be occurring everywhere. Inspection teams have been working to identify problem carts & inform their owners. They will be getting a warning in the form of a hang-tag on the bins. Inspectors will then re-check whether the problem persists. If they’re repeatedly using their blue carts for improper items, then they will document the infraction — with pictures and a letter. Fines will be added on to monthly bills.

City leaders say they’re not targeting the customers who accidentally place the wrong kind of plastic in the carts. They’re going after the people who are dropping loads diapers, animals and other items that clearly are not recyclable. Some people have stated they won’t pay a fine for items that someone else may place in their bins after placed on the curbs. Tiffany Edmonds, a spokesperson for the waste department, suggests that people who are concerned that this may occur should put their trash out on the morning of their pickup. The $25 fines won’t generate much revenue for the department, Edmonds said. The fines cover the costs of sending out a garbage truck to pick up the contaminated loads.. Saldaña said he knows people will make occasional mistakes. Occasionally, we’ll put something in the wrong bin. Those people should not expect to be ticketed.” The full story is available here.

In the February 26, 2016 edition of The Washington Post, writers Joshua Partlow and Joby Warrick authored a story titled ‘A dangerous export’ which tells us the following: “Juan Gonzalez Mendoza’s physical deterioration came swiftly, with deep pain in his bones, elbows & knees that refused to bend. Numbness spread throughout his left side and finally he was unable to walk or even stand. Doctors where he worked — a battery recycling plant near Monterrey — told him he had a fever. His job was putting used U.S. auto batteries into giant ovens. Private medical tests eventually confirmed the problem: acute lead poisoning. The Eléctrica Automotriz Omega plant is a concern in the neighborhoods near the factory where spent car batteries are converted into lead to for new batteries. Elevated levels of lead have turned up in workers’ blood and in nearby lots where children play & families raise livestock. Company officials did not respond to requests for comment.

A tide of used batteries has swept into northern Mexico as metal recyclers seek to profit from the country’s relatively lax controls on lead exposure in the workplace. Officials estimate that the number of batteries shipped to Mexico has grown by more than 400% lately. As many as one in five lead-acid batteries from U.S. vehicles end up in Mexican recycling plants. Mexico has sought to strengthen standards for lead exposure, but no plants have the costly pollution controls and worker-protection systems in place. Gonzalez used his vacation days from the plant to travel to a private medical clinic where lab results indicated lead concentrations. For nine months he was stuck in bed and unable to work. Auto batteries are among consumer products that still contain large amounts of lead. In the US nearly all spent batteries end up being recycled, which involves removing the plastic, acid and other chemicals and then melting down the lead to use in new batteries. U.S. battery recycling takes place in high-capacity smelters. Workers wear protective clothing to ensure no traces of lead leave the plant with them. Special exhaust scrubbers trap tiny lead particles and electronic monitors sniff the air to guard against accidental exposures.

Americans, while seeking to eliminate an environmental problem at home, are exporting contamination abroad, to a region less capable of defending itself. The Eléctrica Automotriz Omega plant employs several dozen workers who say they earn about $13 for a 12-hour shift. Soil samples taken at locations around the Omega plant were analyzed by a laboratory. The results showed lead contamination ranging from 40 to 400 times than naturally occurring lead levels. The company does test for lead, but workers aren’t given documentation of the test results and think that Omega’s doctors play down lead exposure. Employees are instructed to shower during the workday, and before entering the cafeteria, they receive a hand spray that is supposed to change color if contaminants remain. Both employees and nearby residents complain about the lead and toxins they believe are pumped out of the plant’s smokestacks.
