The line of these clunkers at ports of entry in CA and TX has sparked chaos. While new car sales volume has remained relatively slow in Mexico over the last decade, auto manufacturing production has heightened in recent years. Today, Mexico is the area’s top auto exporter. Almost every significant brand has a factory there, such as Ford, Nissan and BMW. In the last (5) years Mexico exported 14M cars, mostly to the U.S. Eduardo Solis, president of Mexico’s Auto Manufacturer’s Association, says they are pressuring Mexican authorities to go after illegal car imports.

Solis says that too much trash from the U.S. ends up on our streets; if a car isn’t fit to be driven in the U.S., it shouldn’t be allowed on Mexico’s either. At a neighborhood body shop in Juárez, a worker repainted an imported Chevy Silverado. Other cars in the shop still had US registration stickers. Juan Flores, 2nd generation salesman, has been selling U.S. imports for many years. He says they make car ownership a reality for lower-wage Mexicans who don’t have access to lenders.
