Mayor Linda Tyer submitted a petition that adds verbage to the junk vehicle code indicating any vehicle lacking a valid inspection label would be illegal to house on properties beyond 48 hours. The petitions where presented to the Ordinance & Rules Committee without discussion, the initiative was okayed to return to the full council. The Fire Dept. apparently has issues in the past attempting to cite owners for storage of junk cars. The cities code has prohibited owners from retaining them for a period exceeding 48 hours. All abandoned, wrecked, junked, dilapidated, non-functioning or unregistered vehicles, unless they maintain a junk dealer license.
The law did not apply any restriction on an auto that may be registered & still running but has an expired or otherwise sticker that is not valid. These citations are customarily given to land owners storing several junk vehicles on the premises. Citations for those violating the ordinance are $50 for the 1st offense, $100 for the 2nd, and $300 for the 3rd. It is unlikely that the Fire Dept. would be delivering citations those circumstances.
